When it comes to firearms, there is nothing more important than safety. And just because you think you have heard it all before does not mean you can write it off or skip ahead to the juicy information that follows. It never hurts to remind oneself of the four cardinal rules of firearm safety. All persons dealing with firearms should know, respect and practice the following: treat every gun as if it were loaded, never point a firearm at anything you are unwilling to destroy, keep your finger off of the trigger until you are ready to fire and always be sure of your target. Following these rules should always be enough to ensure that accidents do not occur. But despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of accidents can be attributed to human error, active and passive safeties are built into firearms just in case. The M1911 is one such firearm.

Prior to its development, the United States Military mandated that the M1911 have both a grip safety and a manual safety – seems I am not the only one that realizes the importance of firearm safety.  In addition to the sear disconnect, which prevents the pistol from discharging while out of battery, some 1911s even include firing pin blocks to ensure safety. Now, in an effort to stress the important of firearm safety – and to amass a collection of spare part for the 1911 – Keepshooting.com carries the 1911 thumb safety.

The 1911 thumb safety is the result of that mandate for a manual safety I mentioned a few lines up. In the 1911 pistol, the thumb safety inhibits any movement of the sear, thus keeping the pistol from discharging. Show everyone that you are serious about safety by picking up a spare 1911 thumb safety today for just $11.95.

As noted, the 1911 thumb safety is an active, external safety mechanism that is found on the M1911 pistol. It is essential to the safe function of the pistol. Found on the rear of the slide, the thumb safety is a small switch that, when engaged, inhibits the movement of the sear. With the sear immobile, the pistol is unable to discharge.

So what does that all mean? To understand the function of the thumb safety, one must understand the function of the sear. The sear is the component of a firearm that is designed to hold the hammer back. When enough force is applied to the trigger, the sear is manipulated in such a way that the hammer is released. The thumb safety, when engaged, inhibits all movement of the sear. Even if the trigger is depressed, the sear will not be able to release the hammer. This newly-manufactured part was manufactured to mil-spec 1911 specifications and features a black oxide finish. Note that a wide variety of the thumb safeties exist. Ours is designed specifically for mil-spec pistols.

Spare parts are an important consideration when it comes to firearms. Like any machine, firearms rely on a series of parts to function properly, especially all components that impact the firing sequence. In general, if a part breaks or fails, a repair or replacement becomes necessary immediately – not only to keep a firearm functioning properly but also to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.

It is also important to consider availability. At this time, Keepshooting.com is seeking to provide our customers with a wide selection of replacement parts for the M1911 pistol. Several parts are now readily available on our website at an affordable price. If you have any need for spare parts, now would be a good time to take advantage of this offering.

Though the thumb safety is not the most common part on the M1911 pistol to experience wear, keeping replacement parts of all sorts on hand is generally a good idea. Consider purchasing a replacement 1911 thumb safety today for only $11.95.
