Over the years, 7.62x25mm Tokarev blanks have been quite hard to come by. That, however, all comes to an end – at least for a short while – as we here at Keepshooting.com have just come across a large surplus of them. These military surplus blank cartridges will work flawlessly in any of your favorite Eastern bloc pistols, including the TT-33 and the CZ 52, among many others. But before getting into the specifics on our Tokarev blanks, what are blank cartridges and how do they work?
Blank cartridges are firearm cartridges that differ from traditional rounds in that they include no actual bullet or shot. Blanks do, however, contain both gunpowder and a primer. They are easily recognized by their unusual design, which consists of a crimped end where the bullet would ordinarily reside. When fired, a firing pin still strikes the primer, which ignites the gunpowder and results in the flash and sound you would expect from any traditional round. The only different is that there is no projectile, which makes them ideal for use in movies, reenactments, military training and other activities that require simulated gunfire.
The 7.62x25mm Tokarev blanks are designed to fire from any pistol or submachine gun chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev. As noted, that includes the TT-33 and CZ 52, as well as the PPD-40, PPSh-41 and many others. They are authentic military surplus blanks from the Czech Republic. The headstamp reveals that they were manufactured by Sellier & Bellot, an ammunition manufacturer headquartered in Vlašim, Czech Republic, over half a century ago. Each blank cartridge utilizes a corrosive prime and steel case and is in perfect working condition.
Contrary to popular belief, blank cartridges are not 100 percent safe. Proper safety precautions should always be taken when handling firearms, whether they are unloaded or loaded, no matter the type of cartridge. In addition to the “wad,” a plug often made of paper used to seal the gunpowder in the case, the gases resulting from the ignited gunpowder are propelled as a high velocity that can inflict serious injuries. Additionally, debris that may be in a barrel can be propelled as well.
