9mm Makarov / 9x18mm Makarov Ammunition

It is probably safe to assume that the term "9mm" conjures up thoughts of firearms and ammunition. It may also be safe to assume that those thinking of ammunition are thinking more specifically about the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge, otherwise known as 9mm Luger. There may be, however, many that think of a different cartridge – the 9x18mm Makarov cartridge, otherwise known as 9mm Makarov. Many popular pistols are chambered in 9x18mm Makarov, including the Makarov, the CZ 82 and the P-64. Despite the often confusing similarities that exist regarding the designations of each cartridge, they are two very distinct cartridges. And no matter what your "expert" buddies tell you, they are absolutely not interchangeable.

In 1951, B.V. Semin went to work designing a pistol cartridge after the Soviet army made the decision to replace the TT-33 with a pistol that utilized a direct blowback action. That cartridge was the 9x18mm Makarov. Based on the 9mm Ultra, the 9mm Makarov cartridge was intended to be the most powerful pistol cartridge that was safe to fire from direct blowback pistols and submachine guns, making it slightly more powerful than the 9x17mm cartridge, which is more widely recognized as .380 ACP. Another interesting piece worth mentioning is the fact that the Soviet military stipulated that their ammunition be incompatible with NATO firearms. The 9x18mm Makarov bullet is actually 9.22mm in diameter, rendering it useless in firearms chambered for 9x19mm Parabellum.

The 9mm Makarov may not be as popular as the 9mm Luger, but that will not stop Keepshooting.com from stocking a wide variety of 9mm Makarov ammunition.
