.22 LR Ammunition

When it comes to units sold, there is no firearm cartridge more prevalent than the .22 Long Rifle cartridge. Chambered and fired by a wide range of rifles, pistols and revolvers, the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, or .22 LR cartridge as it if often called, was originally developed by the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company in 1887. But despite its introduction in 1887, its development dates back more than half of a century.

The design for the .22 LR cartridge stems from an 1831 patent that outlined a thin cartridge case with an interior coating that consisted of a priming compound. This patent led to the development of the Flobert BB Cap in 1845, the .22 Smith & Wesson cartridge in 1857 and culminated with the introduction of the .22 LR cartridge in 1887, which combined the casing of the .22 Long cartridge with the 40 gr projectile of the .22 Extra Long cartridge. It may also interest you to know that the .22 LR cartridge uses a heeled projectile, meaning the diameter of the projectile measures identically to that of the case, and has a heeled portion that fits into the case. As noted, the .22 LR cartridge can be chambered by a wide range of rifles, pistols and revolvers. In fact, it is one of the only firearm cartridges to stake such a claim.

The widespread application of the .22 LR cartridge breeds widespread availability, which in turn breeds widespread popularity. Shooters all over the world turn to the .22 LR cartridge for plinking, target shooting, competitions and much more.
