Originally founded by Ezechiele Chiappa as Armi Sport in 1958, Chiappa Firearms is an Italian-owned and operated arms manufacturer based in Brescia, Italy. Bringing a wealth of knowledge from his work with a manufacturer in Valtrompia, Chiappa's natural technical abilities gave him the skills necessary to form his own company, a company that would produce only one pistol for its first four years before growing into the respected industrial corporation that it is today.
Today Chiappa Firearms is just one component of the Chiappa Group, the aforementioned industrial corporation that includes Armi Sport (replica firearms, target shooting and defense), Kimar (blank, signal and small-caliber firearms), ACP (laser training systems) and Costa (metal surface treatment). It is still family-owned and reliant upon innovative design work and modern manufacturing, two traits that Chiappa believes are key to providing the world with high-quality firearms like the Chiappa Rhino 50DS.
With a profile eerily similar to the beast that bears the same name, the Chiappa Rhino 50DS is just one of the many examples of the innovative design work that customers can expect from Chiappa Firearms. Chiappa cites the Rhino as a revolutionary revolver that is set to tame the prehistoric characteristics still possessed by most modern revolvers. As such, the Rhino features a low-axis barrel that is aligned with the lowermost chamber of the cylinder, which is in stark contrast to a typical alignment with the topmost chamber. This unique design serves not only to reduce the center of gravity, but provide for a more natural point of aim while reducing both felt recoil and muzzle flip. This key feature also allows for the use of ultra-light alloys, which joins a flat-sided hexagonal cylinder for a design that is well-suited for concealed carry. And with a choice of barrel lengths between two and six inches, multiple sight options and different finishes, the Rhino truly does revolutionize the revolver.
As noted, the Chiappa Rhino 50DS is a double/single-action revolver with a five-inch low-axis barrel (1:19 inch twist) constructed from stainless steel. Its six-shot, flat-sided, hexagonal cylinder is chambered for the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge. The steel barrel and cylinder join a 7075 aluminum alloy frame that combine to give the revolver a manageable weight of just 1.85 pounds. This particular model also includes a nickel-plated finish that protects the revolver from rust and corrosion. The revolver also ships with a Picatinny rail on the underside of the barrel, perfect for mounting lights, lasers and other tactical equipment. Other features include a wood grip and a fiber optic front sight alongside an adjustable rear sight.
