Samuel Colt, originally a failed businessman, would go on to become arguably one of the most important figures in United States history. With his design for the Colt Paterson, the first commercial repeating firearm to employ a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers aligned with a single barrel, Colt altered the course of American history – hence the saying, "Lincoln may have freed all men, but Colt made them equal." But even though it was the Colt Paterson that launched the career of Colt and ushered in a period of fame and fortune, it would be his founding of the Colt's Patent Manufacturing Company – now known as Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC – that was to solidify his enduring legacy.
Today, the company that was originally responsible for the production of all AR-15 and M16 rifles continues to uphold a legacy that began over 175 years ago. With the same innovative spirit that led to the Colt Paterson in 1836 at the heart of the operation, Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC maintains its position as one of the world's foremost arms manufacturers with a blend of modernized manufacturing processes and state-of-the-art technologies. Not to mention, the company carries a tradition of uncompromising quality – quality that can be seen in firearms like the new Colt LE6920.
Based on the Colt M4 carbine, the Colt LE6920 is an AR-15 from a company that knows a thing or two about AR-15s. As noted, Colt's Manufacturing Company LLC was responsible for the original production of the AR-15 and the M16 and would go on to sell millions of units worldwide. Though it was originally developed by Eugene Stoner for Fairchild ArmaLite, the rights to the platform were sold to Colt in 1959. The rest is history, and Colt has been manufacturing high-performance weapons systems based on the AR-15 for the military, law enforcement and civilian markets ever since.
As noted, the Colt LE6920 is an AR-15 based on the Colt M4 carbine. Marketed as the law enforcement model and marked "M4 CARBINE" on the receiver, the LE6920 shares many of the same features as its battle-proven relative, including a four-position collapsible stock, a removable carry handle and a chrome-lined barrel. One thing, however, is certain: the Colt LE6920 benefits from the same reliability, performance and accuracy characteristic of those firearms carried by the United States Armed Forces.
The Colt LE6920 features a 16.1-inch barrel alongside an overall length of 35 1/2 inches, which can be reduced by 3 1/2 inches via the collapsible stock. Both the 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel (1:7 inch twist rate) and the chamber feature a hard chrome lining, which serves to protect both components from rust and corrosion as well as give them higher resistance to wear and an extended service life. Also included is the aforementioned synthetic four-position collapsible stock. When combined with the light weight of the 7075 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum upper & lower receivers, you get a carbine that weighs in at just 6.9 pounds. Additionally, each carbine boasts a two-piece M4-type hand guard. Other features include an M4-style front sight alongside a removable carry handle that, when removed, offers access to an optics-ready flattop receiver. As noted, the LE6920 is chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and includes two 20-round magazines.
