Though lauded primarily for its efforts in engineering small arms for armed military and police forces as well as hunting and sporting purposes, Česká zbrojovka, or CZ, is also known for manufacturing components, parts and accessories for aircraft and motor industries and providing special tooling for machine production. CZ, which was originally established in 1936 by the National Defence Council, finds its headquarters in Uherský Brod in the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. While originally contracted to produce aircraft machine guns, military pistols and small-bore rifles, the company now employs over 1,000 engineers, craftsmen and business personnel, which makes it one of the largest arms manufacturers worldwide.
Today, CZ continues to produce arms recognized for their reliability and craftsmanship and is involved in nearly every aspect of the arms industry. They even successfully established a subsidiary in the United States in 1997 with the founding of CZ-USA, which is responsible for the importation and distribution of CZ firearms in the U.S.
Upon first glance, the CZ 83 does not appear to be a pistol that is well suited for concealed carry or personal protection. Fortunately, that could not be further from the truth. Unlike many modern pocket pistols chambered in .380 ACP, the CZ 83 features a respectable size and weight that provide for easy handling while not being too cumbersome. Moreover, the double-action/single-action trigger mechanism allows the pistol to be carried "cocked and locked," which is to say that it can be carried with the hammer back and the safety on for single-action firing. It can also be manually decocked for carrying with the hammer down and fired as a double-action pistol. There is also the benefit of the aforementioned ambidextrous controls. But enough about that; let us get to the pistol itself?
Boasting a rather simple design, the CZ 83 features a 3.82-inch barrel alongside an overall length of 6.77 inches. Despite its steel frame, its small stature provides a light weight of just 1.76 pounds, which makes it a pistol that is truly worthy of concealed carry consideration. As noted, the pistol provides for both single-action and double-action firing. Other features include fixed sights and an aggressively textured plastic grip. Each pistol comes with two 12-round magazines for a "12+1" capacity.
In keeping with the no-nonsense attitude of the day, I will only mention that the CZ 83 is an excellent choice for:
- Concealed carry and personal protection
- Target shooting
- Much more…
