The .308 Winchester cartridge has a pretty interesting story. As you may know, the .308 Winchester cartridge served as the parent case for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, which would eventually serve as the replacement for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge. Though the .30-06 Springfield cartridge survived well into the 1960s, the M1 Garand began revealing its limitations a bit earlier. Its limited rate of fire led to the Springfield T20, a fully-automatic version of the M1 Garand that was to truly impact the development of the .308 Winchester and 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges.

Tests of the T20, and the eventual T25, involved the use of both the .30-06 Springfield cartridge and a newly designed modification of the .300 Savage cartridge, which was known as the T65 cartridge. Those that know their history know that the .300 Savage cartridge was the parent case for the .308 Winchester cartridge. Eventually, the new T65 cartridge was formally adopted as the standard small arms cartridge for NATO in 1954 as the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. Two years prior, Winchester recognized the civilian applications of the T65 cartridge and introduced a commercial variant known as the .308 Winchester.

The Federal Cartridge Company, headquartered in Anoka, Minnesota, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alliant Techsystems. The company was founded in 1916 and has since become one of the finest names in the ammunition industry. Today, the company manufactures a complete line of rimfire ammunition, centerfire ammunition and shotshells – they even have a production contract with the United States Military. Federal ammunition has been used during multiple Olympic Games in which the U.S. team brought home gold, silver and bronze medals. Pretty high-quality stuff if you ask me.

Federal AE308D .308 Winchester ammunition is a product from the American Eagle line of ammunition. American Eagle ammunition is marketed as precision practice ammunition, and though it is inexpensive, it offers an uncanny accuracy on par with the more expensive brands. Like all Federal ammunition, Federal AE308D .308 Winchester ammunition is manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Independence, Missouri, which is an interesting aspect of the ammunition in itself. LCAAP is a government-owned, contractor-operated munitions facility that was originally established in 1941 for the manufacture and testing of small arms ammunition for the United States Army. Since 2001, it has been operated by Alliant Techsystems and is the largest manufacturer of small arms ammunition for the U.S. Army.

That said each package of Federal AE308D .308 Winchester ammunition contains 20 non-corrosive, brass-cased cartridges. Each cartridge is loaded with a 150 gr full metal jacket boat-tail bullet, which provides for increased muzzle velocities. These cartridges have been observed to travel at speeds in excess of 2,800 fps. All Federal ammunition is manufactured using fully-reloadable, newly-manufactured brass cases as well as non-corrosive Boxer primers. And for quality assurance purposes, all cartridges are visually inspected at the plant prior to packaging.

The .308 Winchester cartridge has been on the market for 60 years – long enough for the Federal Cartridge Company to perfect it. That perfection shows in their Federal AE308D .308 Winchester ammunition. Consider this .308 Winchester ammunition for:

- Hunting

- Target shooting
