Saiga Parts and Accessories

Way back in 1807, the Izhevsk Manufacturing Plant, otherwise known as Izhmash, was established by order of Tsar Alexander I. For those who may be unaware, Izhmash is a defense and automotive company based in Izhevsk, Russia that is most notable for its production of the Kalashnikov series of rifles. As noted, production was not limited to these rifles alone. The company has manufactured a host of other Russian arms, including cannons, missiles, artillery and more. Perhaps the most successful series of arms to come out of Izhmash, however, is the Saiga series, which includes a number of Kalashnikov-patterned sporting rifles as well as a number of Kalashnikov-patterned semi-automatic shotguns.

The Saiga series of rifle, originally designed in the 1970s, is named for the Saiga Antelope, an endangered animal now confined to small patches of land in Russia and Kazakhstan. The original model was chambered for the 5.6x39mm cartridge. This early model was unsuccessful, and it would not be until the 1990s that the series was revamped and reintroduced with much success. The new models were produced for use with many of the industry's most popular cartridges, including 5.56x45mm/.223 Remington, 7.62x51mm/.308 Winchester and 7.62x39mm, with the rifle chambered for the lattermost heavily borrowing the design of the AK-47. The Saiga series of semi-automatic shotguns was also designed in the 1990s. Like the rifles, its design is based heavily on the AK-47 in terms of appearance and operation.
