Considering the importance of the gas piston to an M14 rifle, it is probably a good idea to keep a spare on hand or even upgrade your existing piston, which is exactly why Keepshooting.com is now offering an M14 gas piston manufactured by Smith Enterprises, Inc. Machined from 420 stainless steel, the M14 gas piston produced by Smith Enterprises is a high-end item that has found use in many of their military-contracted rifle builds. Talk about quality!
Smith Enterprises, Inc. (SEI) is an American-owned and operated company that finds its headquarters in Tempe, Arizona. For over 40 years, SEI has provided the United States Armed Forces with high-caliber material support and is dedicated to maintaining a close working relationship with their customers. Among their customers are the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and the Department of Energy. Since its inception, SEI's focus has been providing the Military, law enforcement and civilian markets with high-end firearm parts and accessories for rifles like the M14, M16, M1 Garand and more. These parts and accessories are joined by the company's innovative Vortex® flash eliminators. Today, we highlight SEI's M14 gas piston.
In the gas-operating system of the M14, a portion of the high-pressure gases from a fired cartridge is vented through a gas tube, where it forces the piston rearward. As the piston moves rearward, it acts upon the bolt carrier and forces both it and the bolt rearward. The rearward movement of the bolt provides for the extraction and ejection of a spent cartridge case and the chambering of a new cartridge upon being thrust forward by the recoil spring.
As noted the SEI M14 gas piston is machined from 420 stainless steel. After the piston has been machined, it undergoes a series of processes to ensure that the product is upheld to the strictest tolerances. It is first fully heat treated before being polished. After being polished, the piston is hard-chrome plated and re-polished. The piston is then heat treated again to prevent the chrome from cracking, peeling or chipping as a result of hydrogen embrittlement, which can occur during the plating process. Finally, the piston is cryogenically treated before being approved for sale.
Spare parts are an important consideration when it comes to firearms. Like any machine, firearms rely on a series of parts to function properly, especially all components that impact the firing sequence. In general, if a part breaks or fails, a repair or replacement becomes necessary immediately – not only to keep a firearm functioning properly but also to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.
It is also important to consider availability. At this time, Keepshooting.com is seeking to provide our customers with a sizeable selection of replacement parts for the M14/M1A. Several parts are now readily available on our website at an affordable price. If you have any need for spare parts, now would be a good time to take advantage of this offering.
Still not sold? These M14 pistons are currently in use with the U.S. Navy in their MK14 MOD 2 rifles. If it is good enough for them, it is good enough for you.
