Handcuffs and other physical restraints have been around for hundreds of years. The current modern day handcuff is a direct descendant of the original adjustable ratchet handcuffs invented in 1862. For nearly 150 years this design has been improved upon, but the baseline for modern handcuffs has remained true to this original design. |

The main difference in handcuffs is the locking style that they use. The most common and more secure locking mechanism is the double lock. The double lock allows you to lock the ratchets so that the handcuff will not move once its locked. In comparison the single lock only locks the handcuff ratchets shut, it does not prevent them from being moved.
