It is time for a little story – a story that may cause some disappointment but one that will also fill your heart with joy. First, we must travel back in time to the year 1974. That year saw the licensing of the "Springfield Armory" name to a man named Elmer Balance for use with his company LH Manufacturing. Are you ready to be disappointed? Eventually LH Manufacturing and the rights to the name "Springfield Armory" were sold to a man named Robert Reese, who went on to found Springfield Armory, Inc. – a company that has absolutely no affiliation with the federal armory founded by George Washington back in the heyday of our nation. A lot of people think they are connected, but alas they are not. Not to worry, it is time for the joy. LH Manufacturing and Elmer Balance were responsible for the initial civilian production of the M1A rifle. Fortunately, Springfield Armory, Inc. upheld a proud tradition and continues production of the rifle to this day. Even better, Keepshooting.com just got the Springfield M1A Standard rifle and is now offering it to you at a great price.

As noted, the M1A is a civilian version of the M14 – the selective-fire battle rifle that was standard issue for the United States military from 1959 to 1970, at which point it was replaced by the M16. Like the M1A, the M14 is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and utilizes a rotating bolt and a gas-operated piston system. The development of the M14 was the result of a long line of experimental firearms that were based on the M1 Garand, which was often being modified to accept box magazines and include fully-automatic fire.
The M1A rifle was designed by Elmer Balance in 1974 for his company LH Manufacturing, where it was produced until the company was sold to Robert Reese. Production continued under the Springfield Armory, Inc. name. Prior to production by LH Manufacturing, a small number of semi-automatic M14 rifles were produced using surplus G.I. parts and components.
Aside from firing capabilities, the Springfield M1A Standard and the M14 are nearly identical. A few small differences, however, do exist. Among them are their receivers and the presence of a bayonet lug. M1A receivers are precision investment cast whereas M14 receivers were drop forged. M1A rifles also began shipping without bayonet lugs in 1994 after the Assault Weapons Ban was passed. Though the law expired in 2004, M1A rifles have not begun shipping with bayonet lugs yet.
The Springfield M1A Standard features a 22-inch barrel (1:11 twist rate) and an overall length of 44.33 inches. The barrel, along with the receiver, includes a parkerized finish for enhanced protection against corrosion and increased resistance to wear caused by moving parts. Moving to the trigger, you will find a two-stage military trigger with a trigger pull rated between 5 and 6 pounds. Then there are the iron sights. A standard military post front sight is backed by a military aperture rear sight that is adjustable for both windage and elevation. Those looking for precision aiming may enjoy our national match M14 rear sight assembly. All of this is packed into a rifle that weighs just 9.3 pounds. As noted, each rifle includes one magazine that is designed to hold 10 rounds of 7.62x51mm NATO or .308 Winchester.
The M14 is not the easiest firearm to come by. Luckily, Springfield Armory, Inc. is still pumping out high-quality M1A rifles. If you want in on the take, pick up the Springfield M1A Standard today for $1359.30. Consider this rifle for:
