The first cartridge revolver was produced by Smith & Wesson in the mid-1950s. The first percussion cap revolver, known as the Colt Paterson, was developed in 1836 by Samuel Colt. But the first true revolver – a flintlock revolver – was designed by Elisha Collier in 1814.

Collier's self-priming design was patented in 1818 – just before it began production by John Evans & Son of London in 1819. And despite its unreliability, the revolver saw widespread use by British troops in India.

Luckily, revolver technology has evolved over the last 200 years. Now, instead of unreliable flintlock revolvers, we have access to the wonderful Taurus line, which includes the new Taurus 617 revolver.

The Taurus 617 is a double/single-action revolver with an uncharacteristic seven-shot cylinder that readies seven rounds of .357 Magnum or .38 Special +P ammunition for use at a moment's notice, doing so in a medium-sized frame that is suitable for concealed carry and personal protection. Featuring everything you have come to expect throughout the years from a Taurus revolver, the 617 blends power and practicality perfectly to create a firearm that you do not want to miss.

The Taurus 617 is now available from Keepshooting.com. Pick yours up today for just $427.42.

Taurus International Manufacturing, Inc. has quite the interesting history. It began in 1939, when a small tool and die company was founded in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The company began by producing small tools designed for use with various manufacturing processes. In the years that followed, the company branched out to include divisions focused on metals manufacturing, plastics, body armor and, most importantly, firearms. That company is Forjas Taurus, what we commonly refer to as Taurus International. Since its inception, Taurus has had ties to both Smith & Wesson and Beretta, which allowed the company access to information related to the design, manufacture and tooling of some of the world's most popular pistols – including Beretta's 92 series. Since then the company has learned a thing or two about arms production and is now one of the largest manufacturers of small arms in the world.

Today, Taurus International offers a wide range of products from revolvers to both steel- and polymer-framed pistols. The company now seeks to bolster their lineup with the addition of the new Taurus 617, a medium-framed revolver that packs a wealth of customer-requested features into a package that is suitable for law enforcement and concealed carry.

Though often overlooked, the revolver is an ideal choice for concealed carry and personal protection due to its reliability and ease-of-use. Not to mention the quickness and simplicity with which one can clear a fail-to-fire, something that can be completed with no more than a cock of the hammer or a pull of the trigger. Toss in seven rounds of the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge and you have got one worthy piece of protection.

The Taurus 617 revolver, as noted, packs quite a punch considering it is chambered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It can, however, also be fired with .38 Special +P ammunition. Its two-inch barrel is joined by an overall length of just 6.625 inches and despite its stainless steel construction, the 617 weighs less than two pounds. At just 28.3 ounces the 617 is both manageable and concealable, by shooters of all sizes. As one would expect, the Taurus 617 also shares each of the features normally associated with a Taurus revolver, including the ergonomic rubber grip, the internal security system and the transfer bar mechanism. Unlike the others, however, the 617 utilizes a seven-shot cylinder.

Best of all, the Taurus 617 comes with the Taurus Unlimited Lifetime Repair Policy. Taurus International has pledged to repair, free of charge, any firearm manufactured or imported by the company. For details, visit the official website of Taurus International.

Consider leaving the polymer pistols at home for a week – you might just find that you prefer a revolver for concealed carry. The Taurus 617 is an excellent choice for:
