As noted, the 1911 thumb safety is an active, external safety mechanism that is found on the M1911 pistol. It is essential to the safe function of the pistol. Found on the rear of the slide, the thumb safety is a small switch that, when engaged, inhibits the movement of the sear. With the sear immobile, the pistol is unable to discharge.

The sear is the component of a firearm that is designed to hold the hammer back. When enough force is applied to the trigger, the sear is manipulated in such a way that the hammer is released.
