With the two spirals in the center of the tube this pistol length gas tube can build up similar pressure levels as seen in the M4 carbine allowing for greater cycling reliability.

The AR-15 Spiral Gas Tube is an easy way to increase the pressure that is available to cycle your AR-15 pistol or short barrel rifle. If this pigtail gas tube was stretched flat, it would be of a length similar to a full sized AR-15. With the direct impingement system that the AR-15 uses, this increased back pressure can mean the difference between a pistol that is fun to shoot or frustrating.
