One of the most sought after countries for military surplus is Austria. Why? For two reasons, the first being Austrian military goods are of the highest quality and the second being they have a "non-military" appearance due to their lack of a distinctive camouflage pattern. This large rucksack from the Austrian Alpine Division meets both of these requirements easily and once you see all of the features it has you'll surely want to add one to your collection.
The first thing you will notice about this large backpack is while it is large it doesn't feel large when you pick it up. When the Austrian Army designed it they spent a lot of time ensuring that the backpack was well balanced with the weight evenly distributed. This level of engineering is what allows you to carry such a large load in the rucksack without feeling the strain on your back. With the fully adjustable padded shoulder straps and ventilated padded back you will not strain carrying this backpack fully loaded into the back country.
Perhaps the most important thing you look for in a bag is the storage it provides. This Austrian rucksack has a massive 75L volume between the main compartment, detachable top cover, and external pockets. You will find you can pack this backpack full of all of your essential gear and will still have room left for anything you manage to pick up on your travels. The interior main compartment is expandable and can also be accessed from either the top opening or a bottom access area that is hidden behind the zippered lower external pocket. Should you find it necessary to have a day pack for a few hours away from your base camp, the top of this rucksack detaches to provide you with a water resistant small day pack. The possibilities for this backpack are limitless with these features and capabilities that it provides.
This pack is well designed and comfortable carrying loaded up. I wish the belts and pouches for sides were available. Austrian army surplus sites on eBay have pouches and belts, but very pricey.
This is a Well Designed rucksack. You can find the side pockets and waist belt/suspenders from Austrian surplus sites. It has a great quick-release system that disconnects the right shoulder strap and another that disconnects from the waist belt. There a three sizes of external pockets available, along with a shovel pouch, and magazine pouch. As soon as these get back in stock, I will pick another one up...you should too!
Pack arrived in very good used condition. All hardware, straps, etc. are present and entire item is clean and without damage. While I haven't had the chance to load it up, it is very comfortable on the back and shoulders with high quality, comfortable shoulder straps. Design is well thought-out with access to lower portion of main bag possible through zipper on the lower exterior. An internal draw-cord can separates the main compartment into upper and lower portions. Aluminum frame ribs are unobtrusive and completely contained by sewn-in channels. Top portion separates from pack and has two compartments accessed by zippers on opposite sides.
It is clear why these sold out quickly; they are comparable to packs costing significantly more and are built like a tank.
