Beretta, also known as Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta, is an Italian arms manufacturer that was established in 1526, making it the oldest active arms manufacturer today. The company has been family-owned since its inception and is known for its wide range of firearms, which include handguns, rifles, shotguns, submachine guns and much more – all of which find markets with the military, law enforcement agencies and civilians worldwide. Beretta USA, Beretta's American production facility, is stationed just a few miles down the road in Accokeek, Maryland. It is there that the Beretta M9A1 is manufactured.

The Beretta M9 was adopted by the United States Armed Forces in 1985 and officially entered service in 1990 after emerging victorious from a series of trials designed to test its suitability for the field. After being subjected to a battery of field tests that saw the pistol exposed to extreme temperatures, submerged in salt water, buried in various compositions and dropped repeatedly on concrete, the pistol beat out several models from top manufacturers, including Colt, Fabrique Nationale, Heckler & Koch, SIG Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Steyr and Walther. In 2006, the M9 was updated to include a MIL-STD 1913 rail as well as increased checkering on the front and back straps. That version is known as the M9A1 and is available today.

The Beretta M9A1 features a 4.9-inch barrel and an overall length of 8.5 inches. The barrel is chrome-lined to prevent rust and corrosion. The pistol weight in at 33.9 ounces or just over 2 pounds but is easily manageable by just about anyone. In addition to the ambidextrous manual thumb safety/decocker, the pistol includes several internal safeties that include a firing pin block and a rotating firing pin striker, both of which are designed to prevent accidental discharges. As noted, the M9A1 includes a MIL-STD 1913 rail for the attachment of lights, lasers and other tactical equipment. Included with every pistol are two 15-round box magazines, which now feature a physical vapor deposition coating that is designed to withstand harsh conditions.

The Beretta M9A1 is a high-quality pistol that is both accurate and reliable – just research the rigorous MRBF tests to which it was subjected. Consider the M9A1 for:
