The key features of this compass are clearly and concisely bullet-pointed on the manufacturer's page, not on the Amazon page. So, if you want to know those, I'd suggest looking them up. But, since I own two of these for personal use, I can attest that the features are true to spec. So, I won't focus on those details.
If you need a lensatic compass, this is the one you want. Here are my reasons why:
- It's built by the contractor "Cammenga" to the US Military's demanding standards (MIL-PRF-10436N)
- There are many knockoffs of this compass, this is not one of them
- Because the US Military, various federal and state law-enforcement and intelligence departments depend on it, you can expect it to remain on the market and to be kept up to the same military standard indefinitely, making it easy to replace if needed
- The price is excellent for the quality and resiliency
- It has tritium markings for ease of use at night
I have attached a more realistic picture of just how the illumination looks to the naked eye in near total darkness. As has been pointed out by earlier reviewers, the marketing photos and many of the customer photos are unrealistic. I tried to get an as-realistic shot as possible with manual shutter control on my camera and made no exposure compensation adjustments to the photo. It's pretty close to what the naked eye would see on a new moon night with minimal starlight.

You go backpacking and bushwacking and you don't have one?
Some day, you might be out and about, and away from easy access to power, and you might need to get your bearings. While using a military compass takes practice, there are videos about this for beginners and it's not overly difficult to learn the basics. So long as you know roughly where you are, can match up some sited items to a topo map, you can use this to get to where you need to go.
This units has tritium, which, while not bright enough to be a flashlight, is plenty bright enough to keep the dials lit constantly.
If you're very new to compass bearings, it's probably a good idea to really memorize the tritium dials and practice basic measuring in the safety of your home, where you can turn the lights off and on as you practice and really get used to using the unit in the dark.
In a situation where you are walking for a while, you might end up needing to walk partly into the evening after the sun goes down. in this case, if you measured your bearings while the sun is out, this unit would allow you to keep going without as much concern. It's a bit of set-it-and-forget-it for each point to point line. You just stop and regular check your compass to make sure you're going in the right direction.

Cammenga is the manufacturer of the fine compass used in the U.S. military and this is the pride of their fabrication. The glowing tritium has a useful life of about 12 years, so they sent me a compass manufactured the same month as it was ordered. Two scales - degrees and mils - are on the compass card and the hardy aluminum frame can withstand a lot. My compliments to the Cammenga company for this fine instrument.
