About the East German Army

The East German Army, officially known as the National People's Army (Nationale Volksarmee, NVA), was the military force of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1956 to 1990. With a peak strength of around 170,000 personnel, the NVA was one of the most formidable and well-equipped military forces in the Warsaw Pact. Known for its strict discipline and rigorous training, the NVA played a significant role in the defense of the GDR and the broader Eastern Bloc. The army was heavily influenced by Soviet military doctrine and was equipped with a wide range of Soviet-made weaponry and vehicles. The NVA was also known for its extensive border security operations, particularly along the Inner German Border and the Berlin Wall, where it was responsible for preventing East Germans from fleeing to the West. Despite its dissolution following German reunification, the NVA remains a significant chapter in the history of 20th-century Europe.
