The East German Steel Helmet is one of the most recognizable and iconic helmets of the Cold War. Worn extensively by the special national police in East Germany, this helmet was commonly seen at the Berlin Wall being worn by East German guards.

The East German Steel Helmet is an authentic East German military helmet. When East Germany collapsed and German unification was started, all of the relics from the Cold War became undesired to be worn by security services. These helmets were easily one of the most identifiable articles with the East German guards who patrolled the Berlin Wall daily and unfortunately shot and killed many East Germans who attempted to cross into the West. Once unification came, all existing unissued helmets were put into storage until they were later sold as surplus.
Now that the Cold War is long over, relics like these Vopo helmets are becoming more rare every day. Once there were mountains of authentic East German surplus and today there are tiny pockets available. With these helmets being easily identified with this turbulent period for Germany, they are going to become more and more collectible as the years go by. Today you can not only find unissued condition helmets but at a great price. In the coming years the demand will continue to increase with supply fixed so prices will rise.
I was surprised by how high quality this helmet was, it appears to have never been worn, there are no signs of damage anywhere on the helmet, and it's also highly adjustable, and easily adjustable compared to a lot of older helmets. It only took me about 2 minutes to get it to fit my head, and I wear a size 62. I would highly recommend this helmet, especially at this price.
An excellent piece of history
This helmet is an excellent piece of history. It is a fine addition to my collection of NVA equipment. It bears no sign of previous use; the leather straps are supple, the shell free of dents, and the paint in pristine condition. I found it a bit small (I wear a size 58), but it still fit. It even came in what I assume was the original packaging, although this was torn. I did some research before I purchased this; on eBay, most of the people selling these are in Germany, so you could expect to pay this much for shipping alone. However, you can get the helmet net fairly cheaply from a number of sites.
Excellent display item for my office!
This helmet makes a great display item for anyone with an interest in military history. The fact that it is based on a WWII-era design that was rejected by Hitler, and that was later implemented by East Germany, gives it a unique history as well. Some accounts indicate that a limited number of the prototype of this helmet were used by military cadets involved in the defense of Berlin in 1945, and the fact that this helmet remained the standard-issue helmet for East Germany for more than 30 years attests to the fact that it was the most advanced design of any steel helmet ever made.
Great steel helmet
Though I've donated mine to my German teacher for his class, the helmet, I appreciated it in my possession because of the fact that it has conveniences that some Warsaw Pact helmets lack; Those being comfort and adjustability. Obviously it wouldn't fare as well on the modern battlefield (even though it's still used in some countries), but it makes a good collector's piece and I recommend it to any collector of East German militaria, mainly because it's possibly the most identifiable piece of East German equipment.
Another Great Helmet for my Collection
This is the third helmet I bought from Keepshooting.com for my collection and could not be happier. The helmet I received is in 99.5 % mint condition. Minor scuffs but they appear to be from storage. Helmet was packed with care as I bought two others and all three came in one box. All were nicely packed. Helmet never worn as liner is in mint condition. No staining. Great deal.
Great Helmet, Poor Packing
I received my helmet and it was in great shape - brand new - except there was a big spot with dings where the paint had been rubbed down to the metal because it was packed in a box with a second helmet. With only newspaper between the two helmets this one took quite a beating during shipping. Disappointing since it would otherwise be in absolutely perfect condition. I wish the other helmet (not the same model) took the beating since it isn't nearly as nice.
Just as described
The one I bought looked brand new! It was easily adjustable, unlike the M40, and was a great addition to my Broomball gear.
Looks brand new
I was excited to get this and when I saw it. It was amazing how new it was. The leather was not stiff or dirty; this thing was clean.
