The fixed blade knife is the oldest manufactured tool category in human history. Archaeological evidence for flint-bladed fixed knives dates back more than 2.5 million years to the Oldowan tool culture of East Africa; bronze, iron, and steel progressively replaced stone through the Bronze Age (~3300 BCE), Iron Age (~1200 BCE), and the medieval steel-refining revolution that produced the Damascus and pattern-welded blade traditions that still define premium knife-making today. The folding knife is a comparatively modern invention — Roman friction-folders from the 1st century AD are the earliest known ancestors, and the spring-lock and lock-back mechanisms that define modern folders only matured in the 19th and 20th centuries. The fixed blade pre-dates the folder by tens of thousands of years and remains the fundamental knife pattern — the benchmark against which all folders measure their strength, rigidity, and durability under hard use.
The fundamental structural advantage of a fixed blade is full-tang construction — the blade steel extending uninterrupted from the cutting edge all the way through the handle, sandwiched between handle scales. A full-tang fixed blade is functionally a single piece of steel with grip material attached for ergonomics; there are no moving parts to fail, no pivot pin to loosen, no locking mechanism to disengage under stress. The tradeoff is that a fixed blade requires a sheath and cannot be pocket-carried — it's a belt-carry or pack-carry tool rather than a discreet everyday piece. Serious hunting, survival, tactical, and combat applications universally use fixed blades for this reason: when the knife absolutely has to work, it's a fixed blade.
The iconic patterns that define the fixed-blade category each have deep historical lineage worth understanding. The Bowie — the clip-point large-blade American fighting knife — originates with James Bowie's 1827 Sandbar Fight in Louisiana and the subsequent commercial design popularized by blacksmith James Black in the 1830s; the Bowie pattern is the foundational American-heritage fighting and survival knife. The USMC Ka-Bar (Mark 2) was adopted by the US Marine Corps in 1942 as the standard combat/utility fighting knife of WWII and remains in continuous service today — it's the single most iconic American military knife and the reference pattern for the category. The Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife was developed by British Captains William Fairbairn and Eric Sykes from their Shanghai Municipal Police experience and adopted in 1941 by British Commandos, SOE operatives, and allied special forces — the defining close- combat dagger of WWII. The Puukko is the Finnish and broader Nordic utility-and-hunting pattern — a short-bladed single-edge knife with a characteristic narrow handle, dating to at least the medieval period and still standard-issue to the Finnish Army (the M07 Ranger Puukko in our catalog is the current Finnish Defence Forces issue). The Corvo is the Chilean hooked-blade combat and utility knife descended from colonial Spanish designs and traditional Andean toolmaking; the FAMAE Corvo Atacameno in our catalog is the current Chilean Special Forces issue.
Our American military-pattern selection covers the full lineage of 20th-century US fighting and utility blades. The Case Grooved Leather USMC Knife ($99.70) is W.R. Case & Sons' production of the same 1219C2 Marine fighting/utility knife that Case-Cattaraugus-Kinfolks-Ontario all produced during WWII — the direct descendant of the original USMC Ka-Bar contracts. For the production-current USMC pattern see the full Ka-Bar brand catalog at our Ka-Bar brand page. For Ontario Knife Company's parallel USMC-heritage line — including the 498 Marine Combat Knife (Ontario's version of the original Ka-Bar), the OKC 3S USMC bayonet, the Model 499 Air Force Survival Knife, and the RAT / Spec Plus tactical lineage — see our Ontario Knife Company brand page.
Our European military fixed blades cover the current issue of several allied NATO and partner forces. The Eickhorn FK2000 ($171.09) is the current German Army (Bundeswehr) field knife, manufactured by Eickhorn-Solingen — the historic German cutlery city that has produced military edged weapons since the medieval period. The Eickhorn KM 4000 ($367.33) is the premium Bundeswehr combat knife — the KSK (Kommando Spezialkräfte, German Special Forces) and tactical-unit issue blade. The British Army Commando Knife Gen 3 ($175.17) and base British Commando Knife ($203.03) are modern-production Fairbairn- Sykes-descended daggers still issued to UK Commando Forces. The British Army Survival Knife ($148.78) and Gen 2 variant ($167.38) are current UK Armed Forces survival-kit issue. The French Army FELIN Combat Bayonet ($433.99) is the most expensive piece in our fixed-blade catalog — the bayonet issued with the FAMAS and current FN SCAR-L platforms under France's FELIN infantry- modernization program.
The specialty international selections include the FAMAE Chilean Special Forces Corvo Atacameno ($217.50) — the hooked-blade knife carried by Chilean Army mountain and special-operations units, named for the Atacameño indigenous people of northern Chile and preserving the colonial Spanish blade heritage that defined Chilean military cutlery for 200 years. The Finnish M07 Ranger Puukko ($105.99) is the current Finnish Defence Forces issue — the Nordic utility-knife pattern that has been the universal Finnish soldier and outdoorsman knife since the medieval period. The Russian Kizlyar Supreme line — represented by the Aggressor ($121.70) and Alpha ($142.10) tactical knives — is made in Kizlyar, Dagestan, a Caucasus-region city with a long tradition of blade-making and a specialty in the modern Russian tactical and special- operations market.
Our American tactical and civilian selection covers the modern US commercial market. The CRKT Folts S.P.E.W. Neck Knife ($29.95) is the most affordable fixed blade in our catalog — a tiny neck-carry utility blade designed by custom knifemaker Alan Folts ("S.P.E.W." = Small Pocket Everyday Wharncliffe). The CRKT Sting ($68.93) is a CRKT combat and utility fixed blade. The DPx HEST Knife ($130.50) and HEAT Hiker Fixed Blade ($124.95) are designer- driven tactical/survival pieces from Dpx Gear (founded by Robert Young Pelton). The Boker Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Knife ($419.34) is the premium piece in this tier — a Col. Rex Applegate / W.E. Fairbairn-designed combat dagger manufactured by Boker in Solingen, Germany, preserving the WWII OSS/SOE fighting-knife design lineage. The Smith & Wesson Search & Rescue Knife ($31.62) is the budget entry for first-responder and rescue kit use.
Bayonets — blades designed to mount on a rifle barrel — are a distinctive sub-category of the fixed- blade catalog. Our bayonet inventory includes the B2K Combat Bayonet ($277.45), the SOG BAR15T Tanto Bayonet ($79.99) for AR-15 mounting, the Waffentechnik US M7 Bayonet reproduction for the M16 and early M4 platform, and the French FELIN noted above. For the full military-surplus bayonet collection (M1 Garand, M1 carbine, M4, M5A1, M7, Mosin- Nagant, SMLE, AK-pattern, and historical European bayonets from several national militaries), see our Bayonets catalog. For military- surplus knives more broadly (utility blades, trench knives, and period-issue fighting knives), see our Military Surplus Knives catalog.
Choosing the right fixed blade depends on intended use. For combat and fighting-knife applications — a Ka-Bar, Boker Applegate-Fairbairn, British Commando Knife, or current military-issue piece from a partner nation's armed forces. For backcountry survival — the British Army Survival Knife, Finnish M07 Puukko, or Ontario RAT 3 Skinner. For hunting — a drop-point or clip-point blade in the 3.5-5 inch range; the RAT 3 Skinner or any of several hunting-specific fixed blades in our catalog. For tactical and duty use — Kizlyar Aggressor/Alpha, CRKT Sting, DPx HEST, or SOG tactical. For rescue and first-responder use — Smith & Wesson Search & Rescue, Ontario SP Series, or purpose-designed rescue- profile blades. For collecting and period-correct historical kit — the Case USMC, Waffentechnik bayonet reproductions, and the European military-current issues are all suitable.
Fixed Blade Knives live in our broader Knives catalog, alongside Folding Knives, Automatic Knives, Butterfly Knives, and Specialty Knives. Most serious knife owners carry at least one fixed blade alongside a folder and potentially a multitool — a three-blade rotation that covers everyday utility (folder), belt- carry primary cutting (fixed blade), and mechanical/multi-function tasks (multitool). Fixed blades also pair naturally with our Machetes and Axes & Tomahawks catalogs — a complete outdoor kit typically includes a fixed-blade knife for precision cutting, a machete for vegetation and brush work, and an axe or saw for larger-diameter wood.
Keep Shooting ships all fixed blade knives from our Pennsylvania warehouse with free shipping on orders over $49.95 and hassle-free returns, subject to destination-state legal restrictions. Most fixed-blade knives are legal in all 50 US states, but several states restrict carry-length (generally 4-inch blade limits) for open or concealed carry; ownership and home use is rarely restricted, but public carry may be. Whether you're assembling a WWII-era collection (USMC Ka-Bar, Case Grooved Leather, Boker Applegate-Fairbairn, British Commando), building a modern tactical loadout (CRKT, DPx, Kizlyar, Ontario RAT), stocking a survival or backcountry kit (M07 Puukko, British Survival Knife, RAT 3), or collecting current-issue partner-nation military blades (Eickhorn FK2000, FAMAE Corvo, French FELIN), every fixed blade in our catalog is authentic brand or factory- direct inventory from the manufacturers and military supply lines that have defined the fixed-blade category.
