The Makarov safety, located within the slide of the Makarov adjacent the firing pin, is an unissued surplus safety.

The Makarov safety is not unlike other typical slide-mounted manual safeties. When in the up position, the safety is engaged. When in the down position, the safety is disengaged and the pistol is ready for fire. When engaged, the safety serves as a hammer block, physically blocking the hammer from dropping on the firing pin. Additionally, the safety serves to hold the free-floating firing pin in place. Care should be taken not to misplace the firing pin with the safety is removed.
