The Para USA 1911 Expert Stainless is a true 1911 in that it is a single-action, semi-automatic, short-recoil operated pistol chambered for the powerful .45 ACP cartridge. Boasting a fresh take on the iconic design introduced by John Moses Browning more than 100 years ago, the Para USA 1911 Expert Stainless is one of the shining stars from a company that specializes in one of the world's most celebrated platforms. While remaining true to the original, this pistol adds a number of features designed to usher the platform into the modern era and make shooting a more enjoyable experience. Each pistol ships in a hard plastic carrying case with two eight-round magazines.
Originally established in Toronto as a Canadian manufacturer of paintball guns, Para Ordnance was founded in 1985 by childhood friends Ted Szabo and Thanos Polyzos. It would not be long before the company would transition, under the direction of their CEO, to the manufacture of firearms at their main operations facility in Scarborough, Ontario.
Though the company manufactures a range of firearms chambered for a variety of calibers, including 9x19mm Parabellum, .40 S&W and .45 ACP, the company is perhaps most notable for its production of pistols based on the M1911 platform, many of which are marketed not only to civilians, but law enforcement officers and military personnel as well – more on that in a bit.
As of 2009, the bulk of the company's operations have been moved to its United States subsidiary, Para USA, which finds its headquarters in Pineville, North Carolina. Three years later it was announced that Para USA would become part of the Freedom Group, a holding company that also heads up a number of reputable arms and accessories manufacturers, including Bushmaster Firearms International, Remington Arms and TAPCO. Under the direction of the Freedom Group, consumers can rest assured that all Para USA firearms will continue to exhibit the same performance, durability and reliability for which they have come to be known.
As noted, Para Ordnance and its U.S. subsidiary are most known for their production of pistols based on the M1911 platform. Recognized as the originator of the high-capacity 1911, Para Ordnance is also credited with developing a true double-stack 1911 as well as the first double-action-only 1911, which they believe permits the use of a 1911 in light of some users' perceived liability issues with the traditional single-action trigger mechanism. Despite the company's innovative spirit, however, a number of their products remain true to the original platform. The Para USA 1911 Expert Stainless is an excellent example.
Though the Para USA 1911 Expert Stainless remains true to the original M1911, it does, as noted, add a few features that serve to usher the platform into the modern era while offering shooters the best possible shooting experience at an affordable price. These upgrades include Novak rear sights alongside a green fiber-optic front sight and an adjustable aluminum skeletonized trigger.
The Para USA 1911 Expert Stainless features a five-inch, match-grade stainless barrel (1:16 inch twist) with an overall length of 8 1/2 inches. The precision-machined slide and frame, which is joined by two black polymer grips, are constructed from stainless steel and feature a stainless finish that adds protection from both rust and corrosion. The single-action trigger mechanism boasts a crisp trigger, and though the pistol weighs in at a respectable 39 ounces, it is easily handled by shooters of all sizes and skill levels. Other features include a beavertail grip safety alongside an enhanced thumb safety, Novak rear sights with a green fiber-optic front sight and an aluminum skeletonized trigger with over-travel adjustment. As noted, the pistol is chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge and includes two eight-round magazines.
