Originally developed by Scottish gamekeepers for use as a portable hunting blind, the ghillie suit has since found its way into the military for use in sniper units. The word ghillie is derived from "gille", Scottish Gaelic for "servant," and is traditionally used to refer to a young attendant on outdoor expeditions, which explains nicely its use in the term ghillie suit. Others believe that the word comes from the name Ghillie Dhu, a guardian of trees in Scottish folklore.
As noted, ghillie suits are designed in such a way that they resemble dense foliage and provide for excellent concealment in the outdoors. In order to achieve such concealment, ghillie suits are typically constructed with loose strips of fabric that replicate leaves and other brush and serve to occlude one's silhouette rather than just match the colors of one's surroundings. Additionally, the fabric strips are able to move freely in the wind alongside surrounding foliage, which serves to further enhance one's concealment.
The Red Rock sniper ghillie suit is a four-piece ghillie suit that consists of the following components:
- One jacket with integral hood
- One pair of pants with boot stirrups
- One rifle cover
- One carrying bag
Lightweight and extra roomy, the Red Rock sniper ghillie suit is designed to be worn over one's regular clothes. The jacket features an elastic waist and cuffs as well as button-snap closures. Additionally, there is an integrated hood that features an adjustable chinstrap for a custom fit. The pants contain both an elastic waist and a drawstring for comfort and feature button-snaps on the lower leg. The pants also feature a set of boot stirrups for increased support.
The difference between the traditional ghillie suit and the sniper ghillie suit is the inclusion of 600D nylon in the front-facing portions of the suit. By including a nylon front, crawling while lying prone is made much easier without sacrificing the concealment offered by the back of the ghillie suit.
The Red Rock sniper ghillie suit is available in two sizes – medium/large (chest 42-48, waist 32-38) and extra-large/double extra-large (chest 48-56, waist 38-46). Unlike the traditional Red Rock ghillie suit, the Red Rock sniper ghillie suit is available from Keepshooting.com in the woodland camouflage pattern only.
Whether you are lying around for hours on the hunt or you were selected to be your paintball team's dead-eye sniper, the Red Rock sniper ghillie suit is likely to become your closest friend.
