The US Military Level 5 Softshell Pants are part of the US military's protective combat uniform (PCU) system. This system was designed for US Special Operations Command starting in 2001, and is still in use by soldiers today who have not transitioned to the ECWCS Generation 3. The reason why this system is still fielded is it works and works really well.
We have the Level 5 of the PCU 7 Level system, which are the softshell pants that you see here for sale. The softshell pants were made by Patagonia, who is well known and respected around the world for producing the very best outdoor clothing. Patagonia has experience in producing clothing worn by extreme outdoors enthusiasts who operate in extreme environments, which made them a natural for producing clothing for our elite war fighters.

These are supposed to be an outer layer pant worn over inner insulating layers in winter. I haven't been able to test them in those conditions but have been wearing them as a single layer and they are performing quite well. Definitely windproof and highly water-repellent so far. I have a very short inseam, so these are too long but the elastic at the bottom make therm wearable and comfortable. Comfortable into the 80s so far. An "interesting" feature I haven't seen mentioned is that if they are worn without a belt, just the suspenders, the side zips and Velcro at the waist allow a "trap door" effect for dealing with nature calls. Might get a bit complicated with multiple layers underneath, but seems workable...just keep track of where the flap is!
As high tech name brand outdoor pants go, these are a bargain and a well thought out product as well.
Brand new Patagonia pants for a fraction of the price. What's not to like?
Can't get better than this . Brand new Patagonia soft shells at a military surplus price. This kind of deal disappears fast once the word gets out.
The extra large long fits perfect with my 36" inseam. I will be buying at least one more pair.
Alright I just ordered a second pair, so I feel okay with sharing with you how freaking awesome these really are. I'm six foot, a little over 200 pounds, and these fit me more like a large. Fit great, I LOVE all the extra features and the design that went into these. Heads up, these are way more grey then green, for me this is good, because these look more like regular street clothes than military. I love these, thank you so much for carrying them.
