Not the most comfortable grip. It serves it's purpose as a compact tool. Cord handle is an ok idea.

Ignore negative reviewers. They aren't hikers or bugout bag enthusiasts.
Review by Patrise H.
Most of the negative reviews are written by people who are not hikers. If you're car camping or splitting logs in the yard, of course you would want a bigger hatchet with some weight to it. If you're backpacking or bugging out, there's limited space, and weight is a huge concern. You can't always carry the best hatchet possible. This mini hatchet is a godsend for folks who have limited space. I bought mine at Walmart a couple years ago, so I'm not a verified buyer on KeepShooting. I just wanted to stop and defend this wonderful little product. It will split a big log if you know what to do. Look into batoning techniques by David Canterbury. (I don't know this man. I'm not affiliated with his channel.) A nice mini hatchet will keep you from destroying your expensive survival knife on the trail. It's important to keep your good knives sharp for skinning fish and other specific tasks. Don't be hacking wood with them! The paracord gives this hatchet a nice grip. Don't remove it unless there's an emergency. This mini hatchet is forged in one piece, so you don't have to worry about the head popping off. It will perform just as well as most mini hatchets at a fraction of the cost. I have a large Fiskar's ax, two 14 inch Fiskar's hatchets plus a nice Estwig hatchet. I value all of these tools, but they simply don't fit well in my medium sized backpack. I'm grateful to have the inexpensive mini UST hatchet and proud to use it. There are many instances where a little hatchet is simply more handy than a big one!

Who says that a good hatchet has to weigh allot? This one proves them wrong!

It is such a heavy item that most folks don't want to try to pack one around. However, this little hatchet shatters the myth that hatchets are too heavy! The hatchet and sheath (without the fire starter) only weigh 10.65 ounces. This is less than half the weight of the Fiskars X7 (22.25 oz), so this is a great weight savings. This weight savings is exactly what I was looking for in a lightweight backpacking hatchet.

I also like that this hatchet is multifunctional. It has three hex wrenches, a rope cutter, paracord, and can be used as a fire starter as well. So, not only do you get a hatchet, but you also get a tool that you can use for other purposes too. When one tool can do the job of many tools, it saves you from having to carry extra tools which can make your pack even heavier. This is a great feature of this hatchet.

Although this is a great little lightweight tool, I wouldn't really recommend using it to chop allot of wood at one time with. You would spend way too much energy and wear yourself out. For larger jobs, you need a bigger hatchet. However, it is understood that this is meant to be a lightweight tool for light use. I don't take off any stars on this issue, because I feel this tool is built perfectly for its intended purpose of being lightweight.

My only real peeve with this hatchet is that the sheath design is a bit different than what is pictured, and it therefore won't hold on to the fire starter. The only thing holding the fire starter in is a loose strip of fabric on the back of the sheath. The fire starter will fall out of the sheath very easily (see my video). I do not recommend keeping the fire starter in the sheath unless you just want to lose your fire starter! Why would you want to do that??!!??

Overall the hatchet itself is AWESOME! I do wish that the fire starter would stay put, but I can easily store that somewhere else anyway. Since the hatchet itself is so great, I don't take off any stars on this one and rate it 5 stars.

If you are looking for a lightweight hatchet for backpacking, I highly recommend this little hatchet to you.

** If you found my review helpful, please let KeepShooting know by hitting the helpful button below. No weight to it
Review by Jessamy V.
I was initially attracted to the chute cord on the handle. After getting it, took it out camping and realized that a good hatchet needs weight to it. This hatchet has no weight to it. I could see it being used for small tasks but not hacking a branch that is 2 inches or thicker.

Incredibly Sharp.
Review by Deston O.
Right out of the pack this hatchet was "Razor" sharp. Small and very lightweight, it packs well into it's holder that is included as is a ferrocerium rod. When motorcycle camping, weight and size are huge considerations and this hatchet is ideal. The handle is a little rough on the hand if not wearing gloves hence the 4 stars. The parracord wrap does improve this somewhat. All things considered - a great buy. Very satisfied.

It can hack it
Review by Kayleigh Y.
Bought this for the price. It's lightweight, tough (unibody stainless), has extras= ideal for camping. The paracord handle came apart pretty quickly but that was expected. Fire starter works really well. Didn't need the hexes but they were a great idea. Rope/vine cutter was the most handy feature for me.

While the holster/cover was a nice extra, it wasn't really needed, which leads to my only complaint holding it out of 5 stars. In my opinion a hatchet this size ought to be sharper out of the box to add practical uses and make up for the force it will lack. Still a great hatchet overall though.
