Description
The Cold Steel Axe Gang Hatchet is one of the finest battle hatchets produced by Cold Steel. With the staff and management of Cold Steel being active in martial arts and the film industry, they took special care to make this Chinese Gang Hatchet as functional as it is visually appealing. There are many Cold Steel innovative aspects of this hatchet including the differentially heat treated drop-forged head - which has a hard edge capable of reaching razor sharpness, but a soft steel body for absorbing impacts. The handle is made from hand picked straight grain American Hickory and is embellished with the Kanji characters for "Axe Gang" to give the axe added appeal.
I have a few of Cold Steel's hawks (Frontier Hawk and Trail Hawk) and this one is the best hands down. It was sharp right out of the box, not shaving sharp which you don't want on an axe, but rather a robust edge meant to get work done. While the Axe Gang theme, based on a martial arts movie, does seem rather gimmicky there's nothing gimmicky about this axe. Its an axe meant to get the job done whether that job is as a camp axe or a throwing axe.

As a camp axe, the initial handle length is a bit longer than I think most will be used to. It was definitely longer than my other hatchets, such as my Collins Axe hatchet or my Schrade camp axe. I ended up finding the Axe Gang easier to use than both, and is solidly enough built to split wood if need be. The only downside here is the handle can be slick out of the box, which becomes less of a problem the more you use it. You can always throw some black athletic tape on the handle or Gamma Grip to give yourself a better purchase on the handle without fear of losing your grip if your hands get wet from sweat or rain.

This all said, the real fun of the Axe Gang is as a thrower. I found it remarkably easy to learn when throwing, and its built well enough that a beginner needs not worrying about breaking it. I've thrown both of my Axe Gangs hundreds of times by now into plywood, pine stumps, and logs from a downed sweet gum tree with zero issues. Whether the axe hits or misses, it comes away with no damage. This makes it ideal in my mind for not only learning to throw, but trying new distances, new stances, and new throwing techniques without fear of breaking your axe. I've encountered only one tomahawk that had a easier learning curve out the box, but proved to be so fragile the handle broke after only a few misses.

If want a reliable camp axe, I recommend the Axe Gang. If you want a great throwing axe that is fun to throw and sturdy enough to handle the misses endemic to learning the art of axe throwing, I recommend the Axe Gang. For the price, I don't see many competitors to this one. In all honesty, I did not expect these axes to hold up as well as they do after asking them to serve as both camp axes and everyday throwing tomahawks. I've had nothing but fun with the Axe Gang by Cold Steel, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Arrived damaged
Review byAbagale R.
The axe was in a box twice its size with no cushioning. The finish on one side of the axe head is badly scratched. I don't know if it was damaged in transit, or if this is a production reject. The axe head sleeve was also pierced, so one tip pokes out. I bought it for throwing around the backyard, so I know it will get scuffed up regardless when I throw it. But you still expect a shiny new axe when you open the box, and not a defect. I haven't thrown it yet, but it seems to have good weight and balance.

Broke in the first few dozen throws
Review byJerilynn B.
Got about 40 throws out of this thing before it broke, glad I still have the head so I can replace it with something better than particle board or whatever crappy wood they use for the handles. You can say it’s your skill all you want, I’ve been throwing for years and have never broke a handle, no matter how it landed. This one split right down the center.

First competition axe (IATF)
Review byKeland Z.
This is the my first competition throwing axe and I am very pleased with it. I am also currently in my first IATF season and I saw major improvements once I started using this axe. I was told by many experienced season participants that this axe is one of the best for beginners and even intermediate throwers, and also a great all-around axe for the value.

Love the axe but came DULL
Review byAbony E.
I love Cold Steel and always buy there knives so it came to no surprise when I was in the market for the axe I stayed brand loyal. I was a bit disappointed with what I received. The axe overall is good quality for the price of $22 but Cold Steel disappointed me with how dull the axe was. All my knives came razor sharp out the box but my axe was butter knife sharp. After a wet stone session this axe quickly turned into the cold steel quality I'm use to.

No direct replacement handles available, NO 20" handles on the market.

Product works well until you need a new handle. Good luck trying to find a direct replacement. Bump the price to $30 and add a replacement handle and keep your customers satisfied. Until then, thumbs down.

Bought for throwing but have only used for choosing up branches and sticks to burn in the fire. Works great for that. Extra length allows for a firm swing. Really like. Edge held up well so far.

Will break soon.
Review byLazar J.
I've been throwing tomahawks for years. Handles break and that's to be expected. Unfortunately this handle broke very quickly and easily. The problem is that cold steel makes no handles for this Axe Gang version. The eye is an odd size and you won't be finding any replacements for it at all. It is now useless.

Great for a beginner
Review byKeneth T.
I just fell in love with axe throwing. I bought these for me to have a good quality and inexpensive axe. The only draw back is the edge. I spent hours refining and polishing. This was the only drawback. I trimmed the handle at the edge of the writing. It’s now a legal length and does not under rotate for me.

Takes some practice, but super satisfying once you get the hang of it
Review byTiny M.
At first I hated this AC and could not ever get it to stick. Then I took 2 steps back from the throwing line and nailed it. I guess it’s just the long handle, but for me, I definitely have to back up off the line to stick it. Now that I’ve gotten the hang of it, it’s one of the most consistent throwing axes I have.
