AK-47 Magazines at Keep Shooting
Keep Shooting carries one of the deepest AK-47 magazine catalogs on the US market — Eastern Bloc military surplus steel magazines from Bosnia, Bulgaria, and Croatia; current-production Arsenal Bulgarian military-contract magazines in 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm, and 5.56 NATO; Magpul PMAG AK polymer in 10/20/30-round configurations; US Palm polymer with steel-cage reinforced feed lips; SGM Tactical steel; and 75-round drum magazines. Whether you own a Yugo Zastava M70, a Romanian WASR-10, a Bulgarian Arsenal SLR, a Century-import AKM, a Polish Tantal, or an AK-74 in 5.45, we stock the right magazine for the rifle.
The AK-47 magazine has one of the most fascinating material-science histories of any military magazine in modern use. The original Soviet service magazine was a heavy stamped-steel design known today as the "slab-side" — flat, un-ribbed walls and all-steel construction, issued with the original AK-47 from 1949 onward. Around 1959, Soviet arsenals transitioned to the ribbed-body steel magazine (the AG pattern) that became the most widely produced AK magazine in history, manufactured by Tula, Izhmash, and virtually every Warsaw Pact arsenal as the standard-issue AKM magazine from the 1960s through the 1980s. Between roughly 1965 and 1968, Izhevsk introduced the AG-4S "Bakelite" magazine, made from a thermoset phenol-formaldehyde resin reinforced with glass fiber, with steel-reinforced feed lips and metal locking lugs. The Bakelite's distinctive orange-to-reddish marbled coloration makes it one of the most visually iconic military magazines ever produced, and original Soviet-marked Tula and Izhmash Bakelites are serious collector items today. The modern AK-103/104 magazines introduced in the 2000s use black glass-fiber-reinforced polyamide — the direct ancestor of the Magpul PMAG AK and US Palm polymer magazines we stock.
Our surplus steel magazines come from three primary sources: Bosnian Army, Bulgarian military, and Scout Croatian. The Bosnian Army AK47 Slab Side 30-Round Magazine is the original first-generation flat-side design — produced in Yugoslav-era arsenals and inherited by the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina after the Yugoslav Wars. The ribbed-body Bosnian Army AK47 30-Round and 40-Round magazines cover the more common AKM pattern. The Bosnian Army AK74 Magazine is a 45-round 5.45x39mm magazine from Bosnian post-war stocks — an unusual find since Yugoslav-aligned forces never issued 5.45 rifles as primary weapons, meaning these magazines typically came through later Eastern Bloc equipment transfers. The Scout Croatian AK47 Magazine is Croatian military surplus from the Hrvatska Vojska era, and the Bulgarian AK47 7.62x39 Magazine is genuine Bulgarian military-issue steel — the same pattern issued throughout the Bulgarian Land Forces' AKM service era. These surplus magazines are genuinely combat-veteran inventory, priced well below the Arsenal new-production tier but entirely functional and battle-tested.
For current-production Bulgarian magazines we carry the Arsenal line — Arsenal AD Bulgaria is the direct successor to Factory 10 Kazanlak, the Soviet-authorized Bulgarian small arms manufacturer that has produced Kalashnikov- pattern rifles and magazines under Soviet licensing since the early Cold War. Arsenal magazines are generally considered the highest- tier AK magazines on the commercial market, with proper heat-treatment, precision-formed feed lips, and tolerances that closely match the original Soviet dimensional specification. We stock the Arsenal 7.62x39 series in 10-round (state-compliant), 30-round (standard), and 40-round (extended) capacities; the Arsenal 5.45x39 Slabside 30-round and 45-round magazines for AK-74 pattern rifles; and the distinctive Arsenal 5.56 NATO 30-round magazine built for the AR-M1 and export-pattern rifles that Arsenal chambered in 5.56 specifically for the US commercial market. The pricing on Arsenal mags reflects their premium construction — they are approximately 3-4× the cost of surplus steel — but the reliability difference justifies the premium for serious-use rifles.
For polymer AK magazines we stock both the Magpul PMAG AK line and US Palm. Magpul extended the PMAG concept from the AR-15 world to the AK platform, producing PMAG AK magazines in 10-round, 20-round, and 30-round variants in glass-reinforced polymer with four-way anti-tilt followers and impact-resistant feed lips. The US Palm AK47 Magazine is a polymer design with steel-reinforced feed-lip and locking-lug cage — an approach that combines polymer's weight savings and impact resistance with steel's precision-formed feed geometry at the critical stress points. US Palm magazines are available in Flat Dark Earth and Black, and are a favorite of AK owners who want polymer benefits without giving up the confidence of a steel feed-lip. Both Magpul and US Palm AK magazines accept 7.62x39mm ammunition and fit any standard AK-47 or AKM-pattern receiver.
For high-capacity use we carry the 75-round AK47 Drum Magazine — a helical-feed drum design that is the AK equivalent of the Magpul D-60 for the AR-15 platform. Drums are useful for range use, competition, and suppressed-carbine applications where reduced reload frequency matters, though they add significant weight (a loaded 75-round drum of 7.62x39 is substantially heavier than two 30-round box magazines holding the same number of rounds). For competition or specialty-use purchases, drums are a great addition; for a defensive rifle loadout we generally recommend box magazines.
Critical compatibility note: 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 AK magazines are NOT interchangeable. The 7.62x39mm cartridge has a sharply tapered case that requires a pronounced magazine curvature, while the 5.45x39mm cartridge has a much less tapered case and uses a straighter, shallower magazine. A 7.62 mag will not feed 5.45 reliably and vice versa. The Arsenal 5.56 NATO magazine is a third distinct caliber-specific design that only fits AK variants originally chambered for 5.56 — typically Arsenal's own AR-M1 rifle and similar export-market conversions. Always match the magazine caliber to your rifle's chamber. Cross-compatibility within a caliber is generally excellent: any 7.62x39 AK magazine (Russian, Yugo, Romanian, Polish, Bulgarian, Bosnian, Hungarian, or modern Western polymer) will fit and function in any 7.62x39 AK, AKM, RPK, or Yugo/Romanian variant — the STANAG-equivalent Soviet dimensional standard was remarkably consistent across the Warsaw Pact and its licensed producers.
State capacity restrictions apply: Fourteen US states plus the District of Columbia restrict magazine capacity under state law, with most capped at 10 rounds (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Vermont rifle, Washington, DC), 15 rounds (Colorado), or 17 rounds (Delaware). Customers in restricted states can purchase the Magpul PMAG 10rd AK47 and the Arsenal AK47 7.62x39 10-Round Magazine — both purpose-engineered 10-round magazines, not aftermarket-limited larger mags. Customers are responsible for verifying their local magazine-capacity law before ordering any magazine exceeding 10 rounds.
