Compact Pack Hatchet
The Gerber Pack Hatchet is a short, one-hand hatchet for the jobs a knife struggles with at camp: splitting kindling, limbing branches, shaving feather sticks and clearing small growth off a trail. It is sized to ride in a pack or on a belt, so it goes along on hikes, hunting trips and overnights. This version has an OD green handle with black rubber inserts and comes with a nylon sheath.
Features
- Full Tang Construction — The metal of the head runs through the length of the handle instead of stopping at the neck, so the hatchet has no weak joint to loosen with hard use.
- Tall Grind Edge — The bevel is ground high up the face of the head, which thins the edge for cleaner bites into wood and finer carving work.
- Stonewashed Finish — Tumbling the head with abrasive stones gives it a matte, mottled surface that hides scratches and wear marks.
- Corrosion Resistant — The head is built to resist rust, a real concern for a tool that gets carried through rain, dew and damp ground.
- Finger Grooves — Notches cut behind the edge give your index finger a secure spot when you choke up on the head for controlled carving and whittling.
- Rubber Grip — Textured black rubber inserts set into the OD green handle help hold your grip when your hands are wet, cold or gloved.
- Lanyard Hole — A triangular opening at the butt of the handle takes a cord or wrist strap for hanging the hatchet or keeping it tethered.
- Nylon Belt Sheath — The included black nylon sheath covers the head with a fold-over flap and a riveted edge, and it rides on a belt for carry.
Build And Carry
The single-piece, full-tang build is what separates the Pack Hatchet from older wood-handled hatchets, where the head can work loose over time. The OD green and black handle carries the Gerber name, with the brand logo on the head and embroidered on the sheath. With the sheath on, the edge stays covered whether the hatchet is clipped to your belt or packed in with the rest of your camp kit.

Perfect starter hatchet for camping newbiesOkay so this was my first hatchet purchase ever and I gotta say Im pretty happy with it. I'm 5'8 with average sized hands and the grip feels just right - not too big, not too small. Was debating between this Gerber and the Fiskars X7 after reading alot of reviews but the Pack Hatchet won me over because of how portable it is. I mainly car camp so weight isnt a huge issue but I like that it fits in my gear bin without taking up much space. Used it to split some pre-cut firewood at the campsite and it worked great. The full tang construction feels solid and the OD green looks cool tbh. Took it on 4 trips so far and washed it off after each one, no rust or anything. The sheath it comes with is decent too - snaps securely. For someone just getting into camping who doesnt want to spend alot, this is a solid pick.

Unreal chopping power for this sizeI backpack a lot in Colorado and weight is everything when youre hauling gear up a mountain so I needed a hatchet that was compact but could still actually do work. The Gerber Pack Hatchet is exactly that. I processed enough firewood for two nights of campfires on my last trip and this little thing never skipped a beat. The full tang construction gives you total confidence when youre swinging hard because theres no handle joint to worry about snapping. The stonewashed blade looked the same after a weekend of abuse as it did out of the box which is awesome because I hate babying my tools. The finger grooves on the rubber handle lock your hand in place even when your palms are sweaty or wet and being able to choke up for detail work like making feather sticks is a game changer. This has permanently replaced my old hatchet in my pack.
Compact enough to fit in a backpack without adding much weight but performs like a much larger hatchet
