Leather Flight Helmet

The Mil-Tec Leather Aviator Helmet is a reproduction of the close-fitting flight hood worn by open-cockpit pilots in the WWI and WWII eras. It covers the crown, ears and jaw to keep wind and cold off your head, and a short peak shades the eyes. Motorcycle riders wear it for the same reasons the early aviators did, and it also suits reenactors and anyone building a period pilot outfit.

Features

• Leather Outer Shell — Paneled leather with stitched seams forms the full hood, shown here in black.
• Cotton Lining — A 100% cotton inner lining sits against the head and is more comfortable than bare leather on the skin.
• Short Front Peak — A small stiffened brim across the forehead keeps sun and glare out of your eyes.
• Full Ear Flaps — Long side panels extend down over the ears and jaw to block wind at speed.
• Snap-Closure Ear Panels — A rectangular leather panel over each ear fastens with a press stud.
• Adjustable Chin Strap — A leather strap with a metal buckle closes under the jaw and holds the helmet in place.
• Rear Sizing Buckle — An adjustment buckle at the back of the head lets you tighten or loosen the fit.
• Goggle Attachment Points — Fittings on the helmet accept RAF-style flight goggles, which are sold separately.

Fit and Construction

Mil-Tec is a German manufacturer of military and outdoor gear, and this helmet follows the cut of the original flight hoods: snug on the crown, with the side panels joined under the chin by the strap. Between the chin strap and the rear buckle you can set the fit fairly precisely. Goggles are not included.
