As noted, the 1911 thumb safety is an active, external safety mechanism that is found on the M1911 pistol. It is essential to the safe function of the pistol. Found on the rear of the slide, the thumb safety is a small switch that, when engaged, inhibits the movement of the sear. With the sear immobile, the pistol is unable to discharge.
So what does that all mean? To understand the function of the thumb safety, one must understand the function of the sear. The sear is the component of a firearm that is designed to hold the hammer back. When enough force is applied to the trigger, the sear is manipulated in such a way that the hammer is released. The thumb safety, when engaged, inhibits all movement of the sear. Even if the trigger is depressed, the sear will not be able to release the hammer. This newly-manufactured part was manufactured to mil-spec 1911 specifications and features a black oxide finish. Note that a wide variety of the thumb safeties exist. Ours is designed specifically for mil-spec pistols.
Spare parts are an important consideration when it comes to firearms. Like any machine, firearms rely on a series of parts to function properly, especially all components that impact the firing sequence. In general, if a part breaks or fails, a repair or replacement becomes necessary immediately – not only to keep a firearm functioning properly but also to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.
It is also important to consider availability. At this time, Keepshooting.com is seeking to provide our customers with a wide selection of replacement parts for the M1911 pistol. Several parts are now readily available on our website at an affordable price. If you have any need for spare parts, now would be a good time to take advantage of this offering.
Though the thumb safety is not the most common part on the M1911 pistol to experience wear, keeping replacement parts of all sorts on hand is generally a good idea. Consider purchasing a replacement 1911 thumb safety today for only $11.95.

The importance of this part is obvious.
Whether you are replacing a worn out factory part or replacing a aftermarket unit back to stock I recommend you have a gun smith at least check this installation of this part.
It's not hard to put in but sometimes it needs a slight bit of fitting to bet it working right.
Obviously I can't stress the importance of this part working correctly.
Definitely recommend having a gunsmith install it for you.
(most gunsmiths will install it for you for $10 to $15.00) Well worth it considering the function of this part and the potential damage if it's installed wrong or worn out.
