5.11 Tactical has one of the most unusual origin stories in the tactical apparel industry. The brand name "5.11" is a reference to the Yosemite Decimal System — the rock-climbing difficulty grading scale that classifies routes from 5.0 (a scramble) through 5.15 (the hardest routes climbed by humans today). When the scale was codified in the 1950s, 5.11 was near the top of the known difficulty range, and the grade had a reputation for representing the edge of what was physically possible. The name was chosen by Royal Robbins, one of the most legendary American rock climbers of the twentieth century, who helped develop the Yosemite Decimal System itself while climbing the big walls of Yosemite Valley in the 1950s and 1960s. Robbins and his wife Liz founded Royal Robbins LLC in 1968 and, while climbing the abrasive granite cracks of Yosemite, Robbins realized his pants were failing — tearing at the knees, binding at the seat, and losing pockets to rock snag. What happened next was an accident. By the late 1990s, the original Royal Robbins 5.11 climbing pants had quietly become popular at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Agents at the range and on the obstacle course preferred the pant's durability and pocket layout to standard uniform trousers — they were wearing a climbing pant as a tactical trouser because nobody in the 1990s was making a purpose-built tactical trouser that worked better. A businessman named Dan Costa noticed the trend, acquired a 51% stake in Royal Robbins LLC in 1999, and bought the entire company outright in 2002. In a move that has since become legendary in the outdoor-apparel industry, Costa then sold Royal Robbins' full original climbing and outdoor line back to Robbins in 2003 while keeping the "5.11" brand name — and spun the name off as a dedicated tactical-apparel company called 511 Inc., now known as 5.11 Tactical.
With co-founder Francisco Morales, Costa partnered directly with the FBI to develop dedicated tactical trousers, shirts, and field equipment — turning what had been an accidentally-popular climbing pant into the centerpiece of a purpose-built tactical apparel program.
