American Tomahawk Company is an American legend — the firm Peter LaGana founded in 1966 to forge the Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk that went to war with U.S. soldiers and Marines, and which still rides in Army Stryker vehicles today. Revived by RMJ Tactical and committed to U.S.-made steel, ATC builds hard-use impact tools with the same battle-tested pedigree. At Keep Shooting, we carry the company’s baton line — the compact MP Baton and the heavyweight Trench Baton — purpose-built striking tools from a name that has earned its place in American military history.
About American Tomahawk Company
American Tomahawk Company holds a unique place in American military history — the maker of the Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk that soldiers and Marines carried into Southeast Asia, and a name still associated with hard-use, U.S.-made edged and impact tools. At Keep Shooting we carry the company’s baton line: the compact MP Baton and the heavyweight Trench Baton, two striking tools that carry the same battle-proven pedigree as the company’s legendary ’hawks.
The American Tomahawk Company was founded in 1966 by Peter LaGana, a former Marine who set out to put a modern fighting tomahawk in the hands of troops headed to Vietnam. He manufactured roughly 4,000 tomahawks — a wood handle, an axe head with a reverse spike, and a leather sheath — for soldiers and Marines fighting in the jungle. The original company folded in the 1970s, but the design never lost its following. The “VTAC” (Vietnam Tactical Tomahawk) was later issued under NATO Stock Number 4210-01-518-7244, classified as a Class 9 rescue tool, and built into the Stryker combat vehicle’s Modular Entry Tool set — about as strong an endorsement as a tool can earn.
The brand was brought back to life twice. In 2001, professional knife and tomahawk throwers Andy Prisco and Bobby Branton licensed LaGana’s design with his blessing and restarted the firm. Then in 2019, ATC was revived again by RMJ Tactical — Ryan Johnson and Richard Carmack, with partners including Jeff Kirkham of Readyman — who reintroduced the famous VTAC as the updated Model 1 Tomahawk. The modern company is committed to American manufacturing: tomahawk heads forged from American 1060 carbon steel and handles cut from Tennessee hickory or tough synthetics. That same build philosophy — simple, overbuilt, made in the USA — runs through the impact tools we stock.
The American Tomahawk MP Baton in black is the compact, carry-friendly striking tool in the line at $60.90 — an MP-style straight baton sized for duty belts, packs, and everyday readiness. The heavier American Tomahawk Trench Baton in OD green is the bruiser of the pair at $126.88, a heavyweight design whose name nods to the brutal close-quarters trench clubs of the First World War. Both are purpose-built impact tools from a maker whose whole reputation is built on tools that hold up when it counts.
American Tomahawk Company sits naturally alongside the rest of our edged and impact gear.
