Description
SPAX Rescue Ax
The Ontario SP16 SPAX is a compact one-hand ax built as a backup breaching tool for fire and rescue crews. Breaching means forcing a way through doors, walls, windows and locks. One tool handles chopping, piercing, prying and valve shutoff, so it can ride on a rig or in a pack when a full-size axe or halligan bar is too much to carry. It also suits campers, overlanders and preppers who want a single heavy steel tool for rough work.
Features
- 1095 High Carbon Steel — A tough, easily resharpened carbon steel that takes and holds a working edge without turning brittle under impact.
- 1/4-Inch Thick Blade — At 0.250 inches thick, the steel is stout enough for hard chopping and for levering against frames and hinges.
- Full Tang Construction — The steel runs the full length of the handle in one piece, so the tool can be used as a pry bar without the head working loose.
- 5.2-Inch Sharpened Edge — A rounded cutting edge on the ax side handles chopping, splitting and cutting through light materials.
- Pick Spike — The opposite end tapers to a hooked point for piercing sheet metal, drywall, roofing and other barriers during entry.
- Hydrant And Gas Valve Cutout — A shaped hole in the head works as a wrench on fire hydrant nuts and gas meter shutoff valves.
- Black Epoxy Powder Coat — A baked-on finish protects the carbon steel from rust and cuts glare.
- Kraton Handle — A grooved, rubber-like synthetic grip stays secure with wet or gloved hands, and a finger guard sits ahead of the hand.
- Lanyard Hole — A grommeted hole in the butt of the handle takes a wrist lanyard or tether.
- Nylon Sheath Included — A black nylon sheath with snap-closure straps covers the edge and spike for carry and storage.
Build And Carry
The SPAX has an 8-inch blade and weighs 1.95 pounds, light enough to swing with one hand and heavy enough to bite. Because the head and tang are a single piece of 1095 steel, you can hammer, pry and chop with it without worrying about a loose head. The supplied sheath follows the shape of the head and uses snap straps to hold the tool in place, and it is marked SP-16 SPAX on the blade.
