Simple, tough, surprisingly comfortableBought this expecting typical Eastern Bloc crude heavy, uncomfortable, barely functional. Wrong. This Romanian pack is well-designed: simple external frame, thick canvas, wide leather shoulder straps. Mine is dated 1984, clearly issued but not abused. The canvas is thick, no dry rot, all buckles functional. The leather straps are stiff but breaking in. The waist belt is simple webbing, not padded, but works for moderate loads. Romanian markings are visible, including the unit stamp. For $25 it's half what a vintage ALICE pack costs and more interesting.

good 'body, durable canvasMy only complaint on this bag is the compartmentalization inside; it came with a divider sewn in that divides it into two, narrower 'silos' (you can see that seam in the photo above). That was easy enough to cut out. The fabric is a very hard, tough canvas; the buckles are crude but effective enough (exactly what I'd expect from that country, that time); the straps are really too light weight, but they work. The shape of the bag makes it want to tip over; stable when hanging from the shoulder strap, but will fall over immediately when you set it down, and your stuff will fall out if you don't have the straps cinched down. But it'll outlive me; really like the canvas, the body of the bag. Just wish it was about 2" wider.
