Cold Steel Frontier Hawk Hatchet

The Cold Steel Frontier Hawk Hatchet is a modern take on the classic frontier hatchet. Perfect for reenactors and good as a stand-in for any time period from the French and Indian War up until the late 1800s. Far from just being a set piece for a film production the Frontier Hawk is capable of making quick work of a variety of cutting tasks back at your campsite or on the trail.

Close to my hand forged original
Review by Maribel D.
While it's NOT like my hand forged original throwing hawk, it's pretty darn close and since my original has long been gone, I'm happy with this one. Great quality and balance. The handle is as good as I've ever seen. I could do without the set screw, but since it's not hand forged it's still getting a recommendation from me.

Great throwing tomahawk
Review by Rod S.
I really like this tomahawk. The head can be either secured with a screw or compression to the handle, or both. It's light, but throws nice and sticks well. It came sharp and ready to throw. I wish it came with a sheath, but the sheath wasn't expensive seperately.

Not Cold Steel.
Review by Mart W.
This is NOT a Cold Steel product. It’s a knock off. I have the real one from Cold Steel and now this new one. The black coating on the head isn’t very good. However, at the end of the day, it’s a steel axe head that can be modified and used well.

Lean, mean, fighting machine.
Review by Shandricka Z.
Simple. Useful. Light and easy to carry. Not a substitute for a hewing axe but more than enough for camp chores. Better by far than many “big” knives many carry for camp chores and much less weight with a hundred times more performance. As far as stopping bad things happening to good people? We don’t discuss that here, but wow.

COUNTERFEIT
Review by Hagen B.
First off this fake product was shipped with no guard on the blade like all the other cold steel items I have bought. It was shipped laying in the top of the box which caused me to cut my thumb when I opened it.The screw hole was in the wrong place. The handle was not hickory and the ends weren't marked like all my other cold steel tomahawks. The sticker wasn't right. The temper lines were painted on and were easily sanded off.

You get what you pay for
Review by Steward P.
The eye is not tapered, which is required to secure the handle. They add a little lock screw on the side to hold the handle, but it is pitiful. The handle fall off after every throw. Should have just bought Cold Steel axes instead.

Can't go wrong with this
Review by Jamille M.
Not gonna lie, I bought this because I thought it looked cool. I wanted it the first time I saw it, then it went out of production for a while, so I bought it the next time it became available. I am not an axe thrower or period actor, I just really liked the look of this, and it also has a nice feel in the hand; fairly light and nicely balanced. I will likely refinish it as it has a basic finish; clean the blade up, put a darker stain on the handle and wrap it, and then it will be a very special tool. Happy to have gotten one of these, finally.

Not sure what to think I collect Cold steel tomahawks and this one is nothing like the frontier hawk the axehead is a different design I showed the difference between the pipe hawk that is what it is supposed to look like not completely disappointed just wish I was getting the item I paid for as pictured

Cheap but effective
Review by Kacy F.
It’s $30. Don’t expect perfect fit and finish, but it is great for the money. Chops really well and is fun to throw. Seems like it will last a long time.

Excellent axe for throwing and great seller.
Review by Tomorrow D.
This is excellent for throwing. I'm introducing my daughter to axe throwing and this is a very well made cost effective way of obtaining a good one to begin. Its old looking but new and raw steel with black coat, Love it.

Functionally Worthless
Review by Honor C.
This thing is the tomahawk version of costume jewelry. It looks neat, but it's no good. It costs a lot less than some competitors, but it's still a ripoff even at that price.

It comes so dull that it's basically a club, except it's too fragile to be used as a club. I tried delimbing a small green branch (after working for HOURS to put a decent imitation of an edge on the damned thing) and the head came loose.

I used to swear by Cold Steel products (c. 15 years ago), but this may be the last Cold Steel branded product I buy.

Poor Construction Quality
Review by Sherriann D.
One of the reviewers said this was a misleading seller due to the axe being listed as a Cold Steel product but arriving labeled with "American Tomahawk Company." It turns out ATC is a division of Cold Steel.

As for the quality of the product, the axe blade was poorly fitted to the handle, with both a ring of crushed wood around the top of the blade, and a very obvious wobbling loose fit. The handle itself, as several other reviewers commented, is finished with a very slick polyurethane type coating that will need to be sanded off for decent grip.

The finish on the axe head itself is rough, with random tool marks and pitting - which in this case is a plus as I wanted a vintage look. However, there's a clear mold line on the back side that will need to be ground down to make this look period, as well as filling the hole where the set screw is. And the axe blade itself? Dull.

So in short, I'll have to take the axe apart, strip and refinish the handle, grind the mold mark off back of the axe head, then re-fit it to the handle so it's tight. I'm up for the challenge, as the cost was relatively cheap. However, if I could go back in time, I wouldn't buy this again. Maybe the Cold Steel Branded axes (a different selection) are made with better quality control?

New and improved, but still a long way to go
Review by Constantino T.
The good:
- Finish on the head and handle are both miles better than the cheap paint Cold Steel used to put on these. It looks so good out of the box, I wouldn't even bother refinishing it.
- No complaints about the fit and finish of the eye, I didn't see any burrs or obvious defects around the inside at all.

The not so good:
- Handle was shaped kind of like a boomerang.
- Edge was completely blunt, rusty, and very unevenly ground.

The blunt edge isn't a big deal since it's going to need sharpening anyway, but the handle was so horribly bent and warped that I sent it back. Can't speak to ease of sharpening or quality of the steel since it was never used, which is a shame because these axes have apparently come a long way.

Ordered one of these as a Christmas present for one of my friends. And stripped the finish off the axe head and stained the handle as most people probably do. Makes an excellent gift in that regard!

Not a show piece
Review by Arlisa T.
Blade was decent quality steel, finish was terrible. Corrosion under the plastic protector was bad, but I am keeping as this will be a piece I throw in my UTV to abuse and I don't care about the finish. Decent buy for the money, but not the tomahawk I would pick if it could be my only one. Also, came with no edge.

New batch/ Good fit?
Review by Darby W.
I guess I got lucky on the handle to head fit on these. They look oretty decent to me, and the edges are not terribly dull as others have said. Of course these will be easy to sharpen anyway.

Terrible quality. There's no way this thing is cold steel.

Head held on by a tiny set screw that doesn't actually hold it on. Unsafe to use for anything.

Now comes unpainted, raw from forge.
Review by Alease Y.
Lightweight, head fit tightly out of the box, but did clean up the handle by shaving and sanding. I called Cold Steel about the "finish". They do not paint black anymore. There is no coating on all the tomahawks, this is a natural post forge head, so prepare to treat the steel. Looks way better than the black paint.
