About Rock Island Armory
Rock Island Armory is the name that made the 1911 affordable again. Founded in Illinois in 1977 and acquired by the Philippine firearms giant Armscor in 1985, RIA set out to build the classic John Browning-designed 1911 to genuine GI specifications — forged steel frame, single-action trigger, and all — at a fraction of what custom shops charge. The result put a real, reliable full-size 1911 within reach of first-time buyers, weekend shooters, and working professionals alike.
The scale behind that value is enormous. Armscor, RIA’s parent company, traces its roots to a 1905 Manila trading house and has been making firearms since 1952. Today it produces roughly 200,000 firearms and some 420 million rounds of ammunition every year, exporting to more than 60 countries, with U.S. operations based in Pahrump, Nevada and Stevensville, Montana. That vertical integration — forging its own frames, machining its own parts, and loading its own ammunition — is exactly why Rock Island can sell a steel-framed 1911 for less than many polymer pistols cost, and why it’s regarded as one of the largest 1911 manufacturers in the world.
