1852 — Smith and Wesson in Springfield. Horace Smith (1808 – 1893) and Daniel Baird Wesson (1825 – 1906) first met as employees of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, an early lever-action repeating-firearm venture that ultimately failed. Volcanic was absorbed by an investor named Oliver Winchester, who later renamed the company Winchester Repeating Arms — so the modern S&W and Winchester both trace organizational lineage to the same 1850s Massachusetts startup. After Volcanic's collapse, Smith and Wesson partnered to design something new: a small revolver chambered for a fully self-contained metallic cartridge, eliminating the cap-and-ball powder-and-ball loading sequence that had limited percussion revolvers to slow rates of fire. The first product — Smith & Wesson Model 1, a small .22 Short rimfire revolver introduced in 1857 — was the world's first commercially-successful metallic-cartridge revolver and made the company's reputation. The Model 1 sold strongly through the Civil War as a private-purchase secondary sidearm for Union officers and soldiers, establishing S&W as a first-rank American firearms maker.
The Model 10 — the longest- running revolver in history. Of all the S&W designs, the Model 10 — originally called the Smith & Wesson Military & Police, the same "M&P" designation later applied to the modern striker-fired pistol family — is the most consequential. Introduced in 1899 as a .38 Long Colt revolver and quickly upgraded to the new .38 Special cartridge that S&W developed specifically for it, the M&P / Model 10 became the standard American police-service revolver for the next 80 years. It was carried by FBI special agents from the bureau's founding through the 1970s, by nearly every major US municipal police department from Chicago to New York to Los Angeles, by US Army and Marine Corps shore-patrol and military-police units, and by Commonwealth police forces worldwide. The Model 10 has been in continuous production from 1899 to the present — over 125 years — making it the longest- produced handgun in firearms history. Frame sizes — J, K, L, N, X. S&W revolvers are organized by frame size, a taxonomy that tells you immediately what cartridge a given model handles and what hand it fits. The J-frame is the small concealed-carry revolver size (Model 36 Chiefs Special, Model 60 stainless, Model 642 Airweight) — designed for .38 Special and a few small-bore cartridges, intended for pocket carry. The K-frame is the medium police-duty size (Model 10 Military & Police, Model 19 Combat Magnum, Model 66 stainless) — designed for .38 Special and .357 Magnum. The L-frame is the heavy-duty .357 Magnum size (Model 586 blued, Model 686 stainless) introduced in 1980 to handle sustained .357 Magnum firing without the K-frame's forcing-cone wear. The N-frame is the large heavy-magnum size — home of the iconic Model 29 .44 Magnum (introduced 1956 and made famous by Dirty Harry in 1971 when Clint Eastwood declared it "the most powerful handgun in the world"; that statement was marketing-accurate for several decades). The X-frame is the massive ultra-magnum size for cartridges like the .500 S&W Magnum (Model 500), introduced in 2003 to handle hunting-grade cartridges that exceed traditional revolver capability.
The modern M&P pistol — 2005. In 2005 Smith & Wesson launched the M&P (Military & Police) semi-automatic pistol — a striker-fired polymer-framed duty pistol designed to compete directly with Glock for police and military contracts. The naming was deliberate: by reusing the century-old "M&P" designation, S&W positioned the new pistol as the modern continuation of the Model 10 service-revolver legacy rather than as an entirely new product line. The M&P has been commercially successful, adopted by many US police departments (LAPD, Chicago PD, and dozens of smaller agencies), and the line has expanded substantially: M&P9 (full-size 9mm), M&P40 (.40 S&W) and the M&P40 Compact, M&P45 (.45 ACP) and M&P45 Compact, the M&P Shield sub-compact concealed-carry line in 9mm, .40, .45, and .380 (the Shield 380 EZ uses an internal hammer rather than striker for an easier-to-rack slide), the M&P15-22 (.22 LR AR-15-pattern rifle for practice and small-game), the M&P10 (.308 Winchester AR-10-pattern rifle), and the simpler SD9 / SD40 budget-tier pistol family. The Bodyguard 380 and modern concealed carry. The Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 (introduced 2010, redesigned 2014) is S&W's ultra-compact concealed-carry pistol in .380 ACP — slim, lightweight, and notable for being the first production pistol with an integrated laser sight built into the frame from the factory. Smith & Wesson handcuffs — the police-equipment legacy. Beyond firearms, Smith & Wesson is the dominant American handcuff manufacturer. The Model 100 chain handcuffs have been in continuous production since 1900 and are carried by US federal, state, and municipal law-enforcement agencies as well as major corrections systems worldwide. The Model 300 hinged handcuffs — same lock and keying as the Model 100 but with a fixed hinge between the two cuffs rather than a chain — are the modern duty-handcuff preference because the hinge makes them harder for the restrained individual to manipulate. The 300P push-pin variant adds a single-side push-pin double-lock for plainclothes and detective use where cuff manipulation in confined spaces matters. The 2023 Tennessee relocation. In late 2023 Smith & Wesson completed the relocation of corporate headquarters and major manufacturing operations from Springfield, Massachusetts (the company's home for 171 years) to a new $125 million campus in Maryville, Tennessee. The move was announced in 2021 and was driven publicly by S&W as a response to Massachusetts state-level regulations restricting the in-state manufacture of certain firearm configurations. The Springfield campus continues to operate at reduced scale; primary M&P production has shifted to the new Maryville facility. The relocation ended an unbroken 171-year Massachusetts production run — a notable closing chapter for one of the longest-tenured American manufacturers.
