About Windlass Steelcrafts
Windlass Steelcrafts is the world's largest manufacturer of swords, founded in 1943 in Dehradun, India, when Ved Prakash Windlass began forging kukris for British Gurkha Regiments during World War II. Now in its third generation with over 500 employees, Windlass supplies military dress swords to the United States Marine Corps and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence, produces props for Hollywood and HBO, and manufactures the broadest range of functional historical swords, knives, kukris, armor, and edged weapons available anywhere — all from the same Dehradun forge that has been in continuous operation for over 80 years.
The Windlass military heritage is unmatched in the edged weapons industry. Since 1943, they have been the sole government contractor for Gurkha Regimental Kukris — the legendary fighting knife carried by Gurkha soldiers from the trenches of World War I through the Falkland Islands and Bosnia. In 1998, the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency selected Windlass to supply NCO sabers for the Marine Corps, and since 2008 they have been the sole supplier of every pattern of military sword, scabbard, and lance purchased by the UK Ministry of Defence — with their Dehradun plant audited and approved by the UK MoD Quality Department. Their 2011 acquisition of Marto and Bermejo in Toledo, Spain — the historic center of European sword making — added military dress sword production for governments on six continents.
Windlass swords are forged from 1065 and 1095 high carbon steel, heat-treated in state-of-the-art furnaces to a consistent 45–55 HRC hardness, with full tangs forged as an integral part of the blade and threaded or peened construction for lasting durability. Their designers and artisans spend months researching each model — visiting museums, consulting historians, and studying original artifacts — before a single blade is struck. The Royal Armouries Collection, launched in 2022 in partnership with arms and armor expert Matt Easton, features reproductions of historically significant weapons from the Royal Armouries museum, inspected and certified by the museum's curators. Through Museum Replicas Limited, Windlass also holds licensing agreements with major studios including HBO, Warner Bros., Paramount, and Disney — and has supplied physical props to productions including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Batman Begins, and HBO's Rome.
The Windlass product line spans medieval longswords, Viking swords, Roman gladii, Renaissance rapiers, Japanese katanas, Bowie knives, combat knives, the Cobra Steel tactical line, historical daggers and bayonets, axes, shields, chainmail, helmets, gambesons, and a full range of armor and period accessories. The Genuine Gurkha Regimental Kukri — the only kukri on the market that includes the original 8-page government contract, ordinance drawing, and specification sheet — remains the company's most iconic product, carrying the same hand-forged carbon steel construction and traditional Shiva's trident cut-outs that have defined the Gurkha fighting knife for over a century.
