DP28 Pan Magazine

This is the flat, round 47-round magazine made for the Degtyaryov DP28 light machine gun, the squad automatic of the Soviet and Russian armies. Instead of a box, the DP28 feeds from a pan: cartridges lie flat in a spiral with the bullets pointing toward the center, and the magazine sits horizontally on top of the receiver. Collectors, DP28 owners and reenactors look for issued pans to complete a rifle or a display. Reproduction-quality castings rarely match the original stamped steel shown here.

Original Soviet Design

The DP28 was the standard light machine gun of Soviet infantry squads, and its pan magazine is one of the most recognizable shapes in military small arms. The low, wide profile was chosen to suit rimmed 7.62x54mmR ammunition, which feeds poorly from a tall box magazine. This example has the pressed-steel cover, latch and feed housing of the issued pattern, so it is correct for a DP28 build, a period display or a reenactment kit.
