East German Rain Coat

The East German Rain Coat is genuine NVA-issue wet weather gear from the former Nationale Volksarmee of the German Democratic Republic. It pairs a water-resistant outer shell with a rubberized inner layer and the distinctive blue-grey tartan plaid lining that identifies it as authentic DDR military kit. A covered button front, fold-down collar, and buttoned arm slits round out the design for true field functionality. With NVA production having ended in 1990, this is a finite piece of Cold War history suited to collectors, reenactors, and anyone building a complete East German uniform set.

  2. Water-Resistant Outer Shell — Tightly woven outer fabric sheds rain and wind to keep the wearer dry in foul weather.
  3. Rubberized Inner Layer — Internal rubberized backing blocks moisture penetration and reinforces the coat's weatherproofing.
  4. Tartan Plaid Lining — Distinctive blue-grey plaid lining is a hallmark of the NVA-issue garment and adds an extra barrier against the cold.
  5. Covered Button Front Closure — Storm-flap-style covered buttons run the length of the coat to prevent water from seeping through the placket.
  6. Fold-Down Collar — Wide collar can be turned up against driving rain or folded flat for parade and garrison wear.
  7. Buttoned Arm Slits — Two large side slits with button closures allow the wearer to reach inside without breaking weather seal.

  9. Field and Collector Ready — Functional for wet-weather use and ideal as a centerpiece for any DDR or Cold War militaria display.

Ive bought a lot of military surplus stuff over the years and this one is honestly one of the better quality pieces ive gotten. Pulled it out of the bag and the seams are all tight, no fraying anywhere, the rubber or whatever coating is on the inside still feels really solid and not cracked up like some old stuff gets. I actually used it hiking last weekend and it handled light rain no problem, the length on it is GREAT for keeping your legs dry too which a lot of rain jackets dont do. Wish it had a hood but for what it is this thing is a fantastic buy.

The coat arrived in excellent condition, and it was even sized correctly. For those who don't know, East German sizes also factor in height, so in addition to the centimeter measurement, there will also be a G (gross, for tall), M (mittel for medium), or K (kurz, for short). I was concerned I would get a coat that was too long, but I got one that was just right. The only issue was the European cut makes the arm holes a bit snug, but I'll get over that.

Properly sized. At least mine was.

The European cut makes the arm holes a bit snug.
