Proper cold weather coat, not just fashionGrabbed the black Rothco M-51 cause my old surplus one finally gave up the ghost after years of abuse. Shell is heavy cotton so it actually feels like a real parka and not that thin fashion garbage. Buttoned the quilted liner in for a 20 degree range morning and stayed comfortable the whole time, then pulled it out in the afternoon when it warmed up. Fishtail snaps up around the legs like the original which is clutch when your standing around in the wind waiting on the line to go hot.
Liner makes it a real winter coat, shell alone works for cooler fall days
Brass zipper and storm flap actually seal out windCotton shell soaks up rain if you get caught in a downpour, its not Gore-Tex
Runs big / boxy, size down if you dont plan on heavy layers underneath -
Classic look, does the job in the coldBought it partly cause the M-51 just looks right and partly cause I was tired of freezing my butt off between strings. Quality is what you’d expect from Rothco — solid repro, not museum grade surplus, but stitched well and the buttons and snaps all line up. Liner buttons in without a fight and the black color hides range dirt better than OD ever did for me. Only reason its 4 not 5 is the cotton gets heavy when wet and dries slow.
warm for the most part.
