The OKC Rat Model 2 Folding Knife with Black Blade is Ontario's answer to those who love their RAT-1 but want something smaller and more compact. You'll find the RAT-II has the same tough construction, superior ergonomics, and extreme performance as the Model 1 just in a smaller overall size.
I’ve been using the Okatu Black Blade knives for about a year now and love the steel. So durable and I’ve never broken one. They come really sharp but that’s to be expected with that type of steel. The clip has some good flex and I’ve yet to get a gut and need it for emergency openings, which they can do. Just have to apply a bit of force to the release. So what’s not to like about these little stout and awesome looking pocketknives? I use mine for everyday carry. This model has the double flipper to close it and you don’t have to worry about loosing a piece as the locking liner retracts in the frame. No serrations on this one but that’s not a deal breaker. It comes razor sharp out of the box and a good lansbury oil will keep it there. I would recommend a BOB 3 in 1 or equivalent in order to sharpen your knife. I got a bone handle kit and that looks really nice on this model but I don’t really use the blade flipper much so the kit isn’t needed for me. All around a great knife for the price. 500K, an American tactical company uses the model 2 frame to make a few different custom knives that I think are way overpriced for the modest frames that the original Rat II uses. I have two so that’s the number of blades for me, as I only own two so that I don’t lose them. These have become my favorite everyday carry, not for self defense but to use as a knife, and they are really inexpensive and well worth having one in your pack, pocket or in your kitchen drawer. A great budget knife that has held up to everyday abuse. Update to review: Just took a bone folder and the lansbury and these Rat IIs can now shave hair! Nice and smooth!

Well-Designed, but Difficult to Open and Close Well
Review byKeepshooting Customer
The RAT 2 is a simple folder with no fancy gimmicks. There is no pocket clip, so this is more of a backup/utility/outdoor/lightweight knife. I like this knife because of its simplicity. It's also made in the USA, which is a big plus. But I have two issues with this knife. First, it is not very easy to close. When you push the knife closed, you have to hold the blade open for a split second with your thumb, so that it will fully snap shut and won't rattle. Also, if you close the knife too fast, it will pinch your finger. I found it very hard to do a one-handed closing. You need to use two hands for that. The other issue is that the frame lock does not hold well. When the blade is completely closed, you can force the blade to close with your thumb and the frame lock will disengage, and the blade will fall out. You need to make sure that you keep the blade firmly closed when you pull it out. I like this knife a lot, but the difficulty of closing it is an issue. If you're just using it as a pocket knife, you might want to get something easier to use. For utility/outdoor/lightweight, I'd recommend this. For daily use in urban environment, you might prefer something else. Note: if you use a large thumb/finger, you might have trouble closing the knife one-handed. This would be a problem for me.

It's A Rat Knife
Review byKeepshooting Customer
A pretty darn good knife for the $30-40 range. It does all that I need a pocket knife to do and then some. If you are the kind of person who wants every little detail done perfectly and there is nothing that will make you happy, then look elsewhere. I find that with my hands, if I close my hand down, the blade tip may catch my fingers. However if I do it right, and slowly, there is no problem at all. The knife will close with enough force to separate two railroad ties. If you use your knife to whittle, pry, chop, saw, etc. be aware that there is a reason this is a folding knife. The opening and closing motion is quite solid. So solid, that if you have any heavy or sharp items, you do not want to stick it in your pocket with your keys. I did buy the T or X which was supposed to be the locking version, which is true, but it was more work to get it out and to lock it. I'm glad they took that version out of the equation. If you don't mind a little work, you will be rewarded with a superb knife. It's really quite fun to take apart and oil up and put back together. The edge will not last as long as say the Kershaw knives, but then you pay a third of the price. It comes with the full sharp and can be kept that way with a couple of passes on the coarse stone that is included. If you have the cash to burn, get the Spring assisted Kershaw blade tone and for the same price. However I'm sure you will have to change out your blade a couple of times and if you want it razor sharp all the time, the OKC RAT may be a better option. They say that "Rats know how to work" and that could be the most appropriate saying about this little workhorse in my hand. My last blade was a couple of years old and is the same steel and length, the first was 3 inches longer, and had lost it's sharp edge, which tells me that the metal is softer. I think I'll give it another few years and I'll buy another when the

Review byKeepshooting Customer
This a great all around knife. It's not the smallest folding model but is very sturdy and comfortable in the hand. I bought one for my girlfriend and after seeing how sharp it was, I purchased another for my daughter. These two gals are extremely hard on a knife but this has taken everything we've thrown at it.

Review byKeepshooting Customer
this is one of the top 5 knives I have ever purchased, excellent blade ,a slight issue with opening it ,you can open it with 1 or 2 hands. As you may be able to see in some pictures. When open,I wear this on my right index finger (ring on my right hand). Fits very nicely and you have very quick access to this blade. Shipping is excellent with any company. Please give it a try . thank you john the customer you do no deal with China products. Amazon makes that possible .Thanks, my next order is here, Thank You John in CT USA!

Great EDC
Review byKeepshooting Customer
I bought this to replace my Spyderco Endura as my EDC and it has not disappointed. The size is great for everyday use and the weight is just right. It opens smoothly and locks tightly in place. The only downside (if you can call it that) is that it doesn't come with a pocket clip but that's easily fixed by purchasing one from Amazon or another online retailer. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good EDC knife.

Best budget EDC I've owned
Review byKeepshooting Customer
I have had this knife for about two months now and it has become my go to everyday carry. The build quality is excellent for what you pay. The blade comes razor sharp out of the box and holds its edge well. It is very easy to sharpen. This is my first knife from Ontario Knife Company and will not be my last.

A great EDC knife
Review byKeepshooting Customer
I have owned this knife for about two years now and it has been my everyday carry knife since then. It's small enough to fit in your pocket comfortably but big enough to do most tasks you would need a knife for. The only downside of this knife is the clip. It doesn't lock into place well so if you put it on your belt wrong or something it will fall out easily. Other than that this is a great knife for anyone looking for one

I've had this knife since it came out and have carried it daily ever since. It has held up to abuse very well. The only downside to this knife is the lock bar which is very difficult to open if you are wearing gloves. Other than that it's a great knife.

I bought this as my first OTC knife and it has been great so far. It's not too big or small, the blade isn't super sharp but can be sharpened easily enough.

I thought better of ontario
Review byDennisha E.
I have bought hundreds of knives and owe two ontario fix blades.... But I am not impressed a little hard to unlock, not the greatest steal... Still has a smooth open actions, but would rather buy a tac-force if I knew it was that badly made.... At least tac is 10 dollars.... And we the economy sucks right now

The only issue I have is I ordered a black knife with black blade and I received a tan knife with black blade.
The order and box both show black but it arrived tan. Got a good deal on it with a coupon so I won't go through the hassle of trying to exchange it. I also have a Rat 1 black on black that I love but it a bit too large for EDC.

I own a Leatherman Wave and a Spyderco combination blade. The RAT II has become my favorite EDC due to its size and weight. Great quality and value. For this price, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better made knife. More expensive knives tend to be less used or left at home.

10 years of EDC - still fantastic.
Review byCourtland E.
After ten years of EDC, it’s showing some rust on the liners which, let’s be honest, is probably due to my own forgetfulness and lack of maintenance. I’ve bought more knives in the past but I still keep coming back to this.

Easily disassembleable for servicing, no springs and pins flying everywhere like an assisted knife. The main hinge pin is D shaped so that it won’t spin around when you try to loosen the main screw - I can’t tell you the frustration on other brand knives. The clip isn’t insanely tight as to rip your jeans, but secure enough that I can do a handstand and this doesn’t fall out. Blade is easily sharpened and I’ve never seen rust on it. (The only rust was on the liner - see pics). Decent amount of life left on the lock even after ten years. Rounded corners and no “sharp” tacticool edges means it doesn’t chew up your wallet if you put it in the same pocket. Small design isn’t intimidating to non-knife people, but plenty big enough for EDC tasks. This is my daily and I just can’t break it.

I did fall off my bicycle with this in my pocket and the clip took the brunt of the impact, as you can see, and it sheared one of the screws that held it in. With two screws I just could not get them to hold the clip in place and not rotate a little bit, so I superglued the clip to the black plastic and now it’s a permanent clip but hey, it works.

Must have BUDGET EDC POCKETKNIFE

This is not my first O.K.C. own the utilitac 2 and although it is big and bulky have owned it for a year and love it. The rat 2 is by far going to be my favorite next to my spyderco tenacious as far as budget edc. Sharp right out of the box and super ergonomic in the hand almost feels like it disappears. I would definitely recommend this knife to someone who is starting or to someone who loves knives and wants something small that feels good in the hand.
