Thompson Buttstock Oiler

This is the US Army oil bottle issued with the Thompson submachine gun during World War II. It stores gun oil inside the Thompson's buttstock, so a soldier could lubricate the weapon in the field without carrying a separate tin. Thompson collectors, restorers completing a buttstock, and WWII reenactors building an accurate kit are the people who look for it.

• Needle Closure — A small needle inside the cap seats into the spout tip, sealing it so oil does not leak inside the stock.

WWII Issue Detail

The Army issued Thompson oilers from 1928 through 1945, and Colt, Auto-Ordnance and Stevens all produced them. Colt-era oilers were nickel plated, while later wartime production switched to the black crinkle paint shown here. A Thompson stock with an empty oiler compartment is incomplete, and this oiler is the correct period part to fill it.
