This is a US Army cleaning rod for the Thompson submachine gun, the .45 ACP weapon carried by American troops in World War II. You use it to push a patch or brush down the bore and clear out fouling, the powder and lead residue left after firing. Thompson owners use it for cleaning, and collectors and reenactors use it to complete an original kit.
