Austrian Issue Rain Poncho
The Austrian Army issued this olive green nylon poncho to keep troops dry during wet weather in Alpine operations. It goes on over your clothing and a pack in one motion, covering far more of you than a jacket would. Laid flat, it does other jobs: a ground sheet under a sleeping bag, or a basha, the simple tarp shelter soldiers rig from a few cords between trees. Hikers, campers, preppers and collectors of European kit all have a use for it.
Features
- Coated Nylon Shell — The light, flexible nylon sheds rain and packs down far smaller than a rubberized wartime cape.
- Drawcord Hood — A cord and toggle at the face opening pull the hood in close so rain stays out of your collar.
- Waist Cord — A cord at the waist gathers the poncho against your body so it doesn't flap or catch the wind.
- Edge Eyelets — Metal eyelets around the edges take cord or tent pegs when you pitch the poncho as a shelter.
- Side Studs — Snap fasteners along the sides close the panels around your arms and body in bad weather.
- Generous Coverage — The poncho measures roughly 64 x 78 inches (1.6 x 2.1 m) flat, enough to cover a person carrying a pack.
- Olive Green Color — The plain OD green blends into woodland and mountain terrain.

Original Austrian Issue
Austria's army trains and operates in high Alpine country, where rain and wet snow come in fast, so its soldiers needed a single garment that could also serve as shelter. This poncho meets that requirement with a nylon body, a drawcord hood, a waist cord, side studs and eyelets along the edges. It was built for the army's own use, which is why collectors and reenactors look for issued pieces like this one.

Stayed Dry in Heavy RainI took this poncho to a football game and it poured for over an hour but I stayed totally dry underneath. The thick material feels tough and the hood stays put good. Its heavy but that seems to help with the waterproofing. Wish the snaps were a bit easier to do up with gloves on.

Love this thing so muchThis poncho is awesome! I use it as a ground cover and rain poncho when I'm out hiking. You can tell its real military issue, the quality is no joke.

Way tougher than those cheap blue tarpsOkay so I almost didn't buy this because I saw some reviews saying surplus gear always smells like chemicals and mothballs. Decided to try anyway since it was only $40 and my old walmart poncho ripped on the first trip. Shipping was fast got here in 3 days but the bag had that classic warehouse smell, nothing a quick wash didnt fix. Been using it for weekend camping for about a month now and this thing is built completely different from civilian junk. Me and my buddy snapped two together last weekend and made a legit shelter that kept us dry through a thunderstorm. Way better than carrying a separate tarp and tent poles.

absolute tank in stormsI have used cheap civilian ponchos for years that always ripped or leaked at the worst possible times so I finally decided to invest in a real military poncho. This Austrian one is built completely different from anything ive worn before. The material is thick and heavy duty and I stood in a legitimate downpour for over an hour at a football game last weekend and stayed completely dry underneath. The NATO standard design means it works with poncho liners I already had from my time in the Army which is awesome because paired together its basically a wearable sleeping bag. I also snapped two of them together with my buddy and made a quick rain shelter during a camping trip that actually worked. The OD green color is classic military and looks great.
For a surplus poncho in this condition the value is incredible.

Best surplus poncho for the moneyThis is definitely the best condition surplus poncho I have ever found. It works perfectly with my USGI poncho liner and the olive drab color looks really clean. It is a must-have for anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors in the rain.
