Cammenga Phosphorescent Wrist Compass

The Cammenga Phosphorescent Wrist Compass is a watch-style compass on a black nylon wristband, built for hands-free land navigation. Its glow-in-the-dark markings and 10° graduations keep the dial readable in low light, and induction damping settles the needle on north quickly instead of letting it swing. The machined aluminum casing is shockproof, rated from -50°F to 150°F, and accurate to within +/- 40 mils (about 2.25 degrees). Made in the USA by Cammenga, it suits hikers, hunters and anyone who wants a quick heading at a glance without stopping to pull out a handheld compass.

Description

Hands-Free Wrist Compass

The Cammenga Phosphorescent Wrist Compass straps to your wrist like a watch, so you can check a heading without digging a compass out of a pocket or pouch. It suits land navigation on the move, when your hands are busy with trekking poles, a map or a rifle. Hikers, hunters, orienteers and anyone building a field or survival kit can read north at a glance, day or night.

Features

  • Phosphorescent Markings — The north arrow, needle and graduations use a glow-in-the-dark compound that absorbs light and then shines on its own so the dial stays readable in low light.
  • 10° Graduations — Tick marks every 10 degrees around the dial, with bolder marks at the major points, give you a quick approximate bearing without squinting.
  • Induction Damping — A magnetic braking effect slows the needle's swing so it settles on north quickly instead of wobbling back and forth.
  • Accuracy Of +/- 40 Mils — A mil is a fine angular unit used in military navigation (6,400 to a full circle), so 40 mils works out to roughly 2.25 degrees either way.
  • Machined Aluminum Casing — The compass body is machined from aluminum for a rigid housing that stands up to knocks.
  • Shockproof Design — Cammenga builds the compass to resist damage from impacts and rough handling in the field.
  • Wide Operating Range — Rated to work in temperatures from -50°F to 150°F (about -46°C to 66°C).
  • Nylon Wristband — A black woven nylon strap with a metal buckle, punched adjustment holes and a keeper loop holds the compass flat on the wrist.
  • Made In The USA — Cammenga manufactures this compass in the United States.

Build And Fit

The round compass capsule sits on a black frame that the strap threads through, with clearly marked N, E, S and W points on a black dial. The nylon band adjusts through a row of punched holes and fastens with a standard buckle, and the loose end tucks under the keeper so it does not snag. Because it wears like a watch, you can fit it over a bare wrist or a jacket cuff and keep it in view while you move.

Same compass we were issued, still bombproof

This is the exact same J582 phosphorescent wrist compass I was handed at CIF back in '05 before my first deployment. NSN 6605-00-809-5252, same machined aluminum housing, same induction dampened needle no liquid fill so you never get the bubble problem that plagues lesser compasses. I wore one on my non-firing wrist for 15 months in Iraq and it never let me down. The sapphire jewel bearing keeps the needle smooth and the phosphorescent dial actually holds a glow pretty well after you charge it with a headlamp for a few seconds... obviously not as bright as the tritium J582T version but honestly for the price difference it does the job. Accuracy is within 40 mils which is mil-spec standard. Only gripe then and now is the nylon wristband its adequate but nothing special, the compass body slides around a bit if you don't cinch it down tight. I ended up running a piece of 550 cord through the band tabs to keep it snug. But the compass itself? Bombproof. Made in the USA, Cammenga has been making these for the military since they bought the rights in 2004 and they haven't cut corners. Way better build than the Suunto Clipper which is basically a plastic button compass by comparison.

Mil-spec build quality, same as issued
Induction dampened needle no liquid fill, no bubbles ever
Phosphorescent glow lasts 10+ years maintenance free

Nylon wristband is adequate but compass body can slide on it
Not as bright at night as the tritium J582T version

I ordered this as a backup navigation tool for my emergency kit and it shipped out the same day. Had it in my hands within three days which was great. The build quality is exactly what I expected from Cammenga since they make some of the best compasses in the world. The fact that the illumination is maintenance free for over ten years means I can toss it in my kit and not worry about it for a long time.
