About Cammenga
Cammenga is the world's largest manufacturer of military compasses and the exclusive supplier of the M-1950 lensatic field compass to the United States Armed Forces. Based in Michigan and holding the U.S. military compass contract continuously since 1992, Cammenga builds every compass in America to mil-spec MIL-PRF-10436N — the same compasses issued to Army infantry and artillery units, Marine Corps battalions, and Air Force personnel that have served in every U.S. military operation from Desert Storm through Afghanistan and beyond.
The Cammenga Model 3H is the flagship tritium lensatic compass and the exact model issued to U.S. military service members (NSN 6605-01-196-6971). It contains seven self-luminous tritium micro- lights positioned on the sighting wire, dial markings, and bezel that glow continuously for over 12 years without batteries, charging, or any external light source — a critical advantage for night land navigation in combat where using a flashlight to recharge a phosphorescent compass is not an option. The compass reads in both degrees (0–360) and mils (0–6400) with accuracy to +/- 40 mils, and operates reliably from -50°F to 150°F. It is waterproof, shockproof, and sandproof — tested through 24-hour submersion and 90 cm drop tests onto hardened surfaces.
Unlike civilian compasses that rely on liquid-filled capsules, Cammenga lensatic compasses use a copper induction dampening system to steady the needle — eliminating the risk of bubble formation, freezing, or leaking that can render liquid compasses useless in extreme temperatures. The sapphire jewel bearing provides friction- free needle rotation, and the cast aluminum body with powder-coat finish withstands the abuse of field conditions that would destroy lesser instruments. The magnifying sighting lens allows simultaneous target sighting and azimuth reading — the defining feature of the lensatic design that makes it the preferred tool for military land navigation, fire control, and artillery direction.
For those who do not require tritium illumination, the Cammenga Model 27 phosphorescent compass (NSN 6605-01-571-6052) offers the same mil-spec construction, sapphire bearing, and copper dampening system at a lower price point — with luminous paint that glows after brief exposure to any light source. Cammenga also manufactures tritium and phosphorescent wrist compasses, the Destinate D3-T protractor compass with six tritium micro-lights and four map scales, Beta Blades tritium-illuminated fixed blade knives, and EasyLoader magazine speed loaders for AR-15 and 9mm platforms.
