Same compass we were issued, still bombproofThis is the exact same J582 phosphorescent wrist compass I was handed at CIF back in '05 before my first deployment. NSN 6605-00-809-5252, same machined aluminum housing, same induction dampened needle no liquid fill so you never get the bubble problem that plagues lesser compasses. I wore one on my non-firing wrist for 15 months in Iraq and it never let me down. The sapphire jewel bearing keeps the needle smooth and the phosphorescent dial actually holds a glow pretty well after you charge it with a headlamp for a few seconds... obviously not as bright as the tritium J582T version but honestly for the price difference it does the job. Accuracy is within 40 mils which is mil-spec standard. Only gripe then and now is the nylon wristband its adequate but nothing special, the compass body slides around a bit if you don't cinch it down tight. I ended up running a piece of 550 cord through the band tabs to keep it snug. But the compass itself? Bombproof. Made in the USA, Cammenga has been making these for the military since they bought the rights in 2004 and they haven't cut corners. Way better build than the Suunto Clipper which is basically a plastic button compass by comparison.
Mil-spec build quality, same as issued
Induction dampened needle no liquid fill, no bubbles ever
Phosphorescent glow lasts 10+ years maintenance freeNylon wristband is adequate but compass body can slide on it
Not as bright at night as the tritium J582T version -
Great backup compass, arrived faster than expectedI ordered this as a backup navigation tool for my emergency kit and it shipped out the same day. Had it in my hands within three days which was great. The build quality is exactly what I expected from Cammenga since they make some of the best compasses in the world. The fact that the illumination is maintenance free for over ten years means I can toss it in my kit and not worry about it for a long time.
