NVA Stone Grey Trousers
These are East German service pants, issued to enlisted personnel of the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA), the East German armed forces, during the Cold War. They were cut as dress and service uniform trousers in heavy wool-blend cloth that holds a crease and stays warm in cold weather. Collectors, Cold War reenactors and anyone building an accurate NVA uniform will find the correct cut and colour here, straight from government stock.
Features
- Wool-Blend Cloth — The fabric is mostly wool with a polyamide or polyester share, which adds strength and helps the trousers keep their shape.
- Stone Grey Colour — The NVA's stone grey (steingrau) is a mid grey with a faint green cast, characteristic of late Cold War East German uniforms.
- Pleated Front — Forward pleats at the waist give room through the hips and seat for a traditional dress-trouser drape.
- Straight Leg Cut — The legs fall straight from hip to hem with a pressed center crease down the front.
- Button Tab Waist Closure — A buttoned tab at the waistband sits over a hook-and-bar fastening, with a button fly below.
- Belt Loops — Loops around the waistband take a standard trouser belt or military webbing belt.
- Suspender D-Rings — Three D-rings sewn inside the waistband let you wear the trousers with braces instead of a belt.
- Slash and Flap Pockets — Angled slash pockets sit at the front, with button-flap pockets at the rear.
Issued by the NVA
The NVA issued these trousers as part of its grey service uniform, worn for duty and dress occasions rather than in the field. Internal waist tabs with an elastic band and buttonholes allow a small amount of adjustment at the waist. These came from East German army stores and were not made by a commercial maker for the surplus market, so the cloth, colour and hardware match what soldiers actually wore.

Good pants for the trailThese East German grey wool pants are decent for hiking, honestly I almost went with a different brand from one of the big outdoor companies but figured id try these since the price was right. The wool is heavier than I expected which is nice when youre out early and the mornings are still cold. They move okay on steep sections though theyre not super stretchy or anything. Took them on a 6 mile loop last weekend and no issues at all. Packaging was simple, nothing fancy. Fit is a little loose in the waist but a belt fixes that.

Quality pantsI own a few pairs of these, and I love them. The wool is substantial (I was expecting these to be lightweight for some reason). I think they would be equally great out in the woods or worn for occasions where dress pants are the order of the day. Despite being decades old, one pair still had pretty sharp creases, and another pair still had the tag on them. If you want a rugged pair of pants that looks good, I don't think you can go wrong with these, especially for the price.

Wool blend keeps you warm, and the pants have an elastic at the waist, to give you a more comfortable fit.
Button fly can take a little getting used to.
